Guys I am looking for a good Fireman's axe to give to my brother in law for his academy graduation present. If you have any leads or one for sale hit me up. Looking for something with a pick on one side, typical firemans axe i am assuming. Thanks

I would definitely opt for a vintage piece off e-bay rather then any modern POS

I'm a fire fighter and we just use any axe you might find in a hardware store with a composite handle. Axes with picks on the opposite side of the blade tend to not be grabbed if it's an option. The flat part of an axe head makes for a good hammer or impact tool for gaining entry whether it be when paired with another tool, or just bashing the door in with the back of the axe head. Which is my favorite method. :D

thanks for the responses. I want to do a nice vintage axe. I was thinking about handles. I know a composite handle would withstand more impact, but do you guys use an axe with a wood handle. I would be interested to hear your thinking on this Texas Gun Person. BTW I am in Houston and also am a gun freak

I can't remember seeing wooden handle anythings on any of our trucks or neighboring departments.

Oh wait, our brooms have wooden handles. :) As far as our axes go... nope. They are all composite material.
Another tool that is a staple on any fire department is the halligan bar. I'm just they cost a good bit more than an axe though.

Honestly though the single piece of equipment that I have bought for myself that I use way more than anything else is my Surefire G2 LED Fire Rescue light paired with a black jack helmet mount. I have all sorts of small crap stuffed into my bunker gear, but it's the helmet light I use pretty much on any night time call. Much better than the light on your chest that flops around. More light is always nice to have, or at least have the option of having. One of the first things that is done on a structure fire is the electricity gets taken out. No more light in there. :)

You may have a Harbor Frieght near you, they have a Fireman's Hatchet and a Fireman's Axe reasonably priced.

Avoid the Harbor Freight axe. Good head, but the handle broke off in 1 swing, 2 different times.

i'll let you know how it turns out with a new handle.
