HEre is an idea for Jerry:

With the folder hopefully coming out soon, this would be a great variant of it. Why not make a FireFighter's version. It could be a special run or if in the permanent line up would probably be a real big seller. A 4" in long 3/16" thick bladed folder, with at least a partially serrated blade and a rounder tip for safely inserting under clothing, seatbelts etc.. (like the Spyderco Rescue), Red handles, and possibly an automatic opening device. And a strong carrying clip. This would fill my needs and allow easy carry for when I hopefully soon return to my civilian life and Fire Dept. job. :o :o

There would probably be many career and volunteer firefighters who are Busse fans who would like this.

It could be named "The BUSSE INFERNO"

Good idea or...... take 1 ARK and blunt the tip. Would make a nice little pry bar when you need it. or a matched set of Paul's Hatchet and a folder.

Happiness is putting the wet stuff on the red stuff.
Happiness is also being retired and not having to crawl around people's bedrooms at 3:00 AM

Yeah, I've already contemplated using PH with the fire dept. Get a firefighter folder and PH both with fire engine red handles!!

i thought about your ARK knife idea before, but a folder w/clip is much easier to carry and attach to my bunker pants-- blunting the end of the ARK would make it a good rescue knife for civilian use!

Good idea!! At the very least it could be a variant.....but then only Eric would have it...and I don't think he's a firefighter ;)

Fireman's knife -- a great idea. I note you would like some kind of "opening device". That's the rub with folders -- Spyderco's blocking patent for the opening hole in the blade, leaving competitors with studs, misshapen openings and other less efficient opening devices. This is a truly bogus patent, so obvious that patent lawyers I talk to just laugh when they see what Spyderco is getting away with as brilliant technology. However, no competing manufacturer seems willing to take on Spyderco in federal court on the patent, no matter what kind of advice they get about the likelyhood that the patent can be successfully challenged. Could Jerry Busse be the guy who finally takes on the lame Spyderco hole in the blade patent and gets it voided?

That's beautiful... A patent on a void.

Someone either deserves a beer or a kick in the head for that idea.

And not just red handles, see if you can find some kind of red coating!

Instead of red if you want high visibility, how about hunters orange? I think that bright orange is recognized as an emergency service and rescue oriented color.

This is one career fireman who doesn't want a red or orange knife :barf:

I've found Basic 3s for a few of my friends at work and I now carry a MS. I actually want a sharp tip, works better for minor overhaul when you don't want to rip stuff up with a bigger bar.

What I would like is a small crash axe, preferably with a flattened prying tip opposite the blade, although I could live with a pick head. In a normal color. ;) It should be larger than a PH, but smaller than a 6lb. fire axe.

The bad part about a lot of "fire/rescue" tools is that they try to make them do everything. We have a truckload (literally) of specific use tools, so the knife/axe doesn't have to have a bunch of extra crap on it.

Ranger-try a fixed blade in a radio pocket on your gear, you can tie it using the drain hole on the pocket.

6b346,
First the Patent has come up and Sal developed the idea so he really doesn't have a "blocking patent". Spyderco has now registered the round hole as a trademark (Much better than a Patent, lasts damn near forever look at Micky Mouse). Sal will (or at least would in the past) license it's use. With all of the inovations Sal and Spyderco have made in the folder arena I wonder why you feel that it is a "truly bogus patent"? Sal came up with the idea and everyone laughed. Sal pushed it and pushed it and it has worked it's way to become one of the best options. A whole company was founded on Sal's inovations and many things like pocket clips and other features we can thank Sal for are now in use by almost every folder maker. Sal developed it and should have control over it just as Jerry has control over his creations. Jerry wouldn't take Sal and Spyderco to court because he would lose. ANYONE would lose. The history of this development is just too damn well documented. Also, Jerry (and all makers) rely on the same protection for their inovations. Do you want to see knockoff copies of "INFI SH's"? I'm sure Jerry don't!

I am now aware that Spyderco's original 1982 folder "depression in the blade" patent has expired and that they are trying to convert the patent into trademark protection. Here again, I feel that this is a likely abuse of trademark law and may be challenged. An attempt to convert a time-limited product patent into an endless trademark right is not looked at kindly by the federal courts. I understand that Spyderco and its founder are very sucessful in the edged products industry and have good "cred", but turning a suspicious patent into a trademark looks like a classic case of the illegal extension of a patent monopoly. In the past, Spyderco has benefitted from the fact that most knockoffs out there have been cheap, fly-by-night imports whose pricipals have not been interested in a big, expensive legal fight. They only wanted to get a big shipment into hte USA, get it sold to retailers before Spyderco came down on them with their aggrssive lawyers. Then they changed their names and did it again with product form the same Asian factories. What would happen if a well-financed domestic manufacturer actually decided to take this issue on as a serious litigant?

As a retired fire capt. I must say that I never really liked folders for a first line knife. I used to use an old German paratrooper's gravity knive but the blade was too brittle for prying. also didn't trust the locks or pivots to hold up. A modified SRK would work well if you wish to follow that path. At the time, late 60's and 70's, the favored blade on the HFD was a buck straight blade. Hey Ranger, not sure how old you are but if you remember, tell them why we use to carry knives and forks under tire tube straps on our helmets.....

6b346,

Actually Disney is very happy that the Federal Courts and US Congress seem to be just fine with this concept. While Patents and Copyrights are not the same thing exactly (Copyrights last much longer than Patents do) Mickey Mouse rolled from Copyright to Trademark with a little help from their "friends". In fact Disney has been doing everything in their power to be sure that all of their Copyright protected products never fall into Public Domain and the Federal Courts and US Congress are helping them right along.

When you see a SpyderHole you think of Spyderco and Sal. A very viable argument can be made for this feature to become a trademark of Spyderco. But remember Sal and Spyderco are not the only ones out there ensuring that their patents or trademarks are protected. Everyone does it. That is the whole reason for seeking the protection in the first place. Also, remember that any shape other than round is fair game.

I am sorry for highjacking this thread and will now back away from the keyboard.

To go back on topic... I would think that a MS would be a great little utility blade for any Public Safety position. Just thick, tuff and long enough to pry like hell and cut with the big boys but small enough to fit in your kit without being "overbearing". A Busse Crash Ax would be cool. Maybe SRK could do a run and save everyone a few bucks? Oversize the Ratchet 50% to 75% and add a prying lever/spike on the oposite side of the head.

 hey i have a patent on that knife:mad: you have to send it to me for "testing" before it can be abused:p
1/4" ms would kick butt:D :D

idahoskunk,

I KNOW you have a few of these while I only have one lonely 5/16" MS and one equally lonely LMS. I think YOU should send ME a few of yours for test and eval. After all... Poor Me. I have no 1/4" MS's to compare my Fatty and Skinny to. :D

wtfoinker, some how i just don't believe you:rolleyes: i would just bet you're sittin on a stash of infi and just ain't telling cause you'll be branded a HOG!

well it's high time you came clean with us and tell us what you really have:D

Dear Pepe Le Pig,

Now I never said that those were the ONLY INFI blades I have... Just that I don't have a "standard" 1/4" MS and as you have several EXTRA and you already have my address I would be able to help you out by storing some of your duplicate items. (no storage fee) This would also allow me to compare the 1/4" MS to it's Fatty and Skinny cousins.

I've always heard you were a Giver.

Give... Give... Give...

Never Take, always Give.

And as it is better to give than to receive, I would be doing you a favor. Help me, IdahoHog, Help me, Help you :D
