Unless you have a lathe dont bother. Seriously, this isnt a slight on you, the tolerances have to be very very tight and working out the bore and stroke will be a PITA, its easier to buy one :)

I strongly suggest that you consider buying from Emil who sells on eBay as "ebprimitives." The product he turns out is 1st rate, the price is very good (as in, I defy you to match it), and he has a full range of accessories. Comes with good directions.

i have every expectation that they're tricky :) that's part of the fun and journey of hacking fire. the entire point of TRYING to make these things, and sometimes succeeding even on some devices and methods is that you can do it later... survival isn't so good if you can't make stuff.

anyway though, that ebprimitives stuff is way cool, very good prices, i agree, nice work. i might even buy one, as using one in the next few weeks would be cool.

actually, i have access to a shop sometimes, i MIGHT be able to produce like that, however, i think some items from home despot off the shelf might just turn the trick for amusement purposes.

Here's one that I tried to make out of brass. Still need to iron the kinks out of it.

I did make a functioning one out of lucite. You can make one without a lathe, but it ain't easy. At least it wasn't for me.

that's very cool. i in fact have a goodly piece of aluminum tube i want to dry next. how did you block up the end? i was thinking of jb-weld metal stuff and/or epoxy - basically sink the tube into some wood about 1", and anchor that sucker good in a little puddle of epoxy in the well of the wood hole.

why a lathe? start with appropriate wooden dowel yes? the important part is the seal... the other tolerances can be achieved with sandpaper and twirling it up. if you're in a real hurry... use a good electric drill (drill press better), a NEW/sharp drill, and zooom. drill the hole. then chuck up a dowel, and some sandpaper, and slowly go up and down the dowel... stop now and again and check - that's kinda a lathe ;) i used my 18v dewalt drill, freehand, and made a so so prototype.

actually, i got me just recently one of the ebprimitives pistons - VERY nice stuff. came with a sweet tinder box, that apparently one can use with other devices (lenses, fire bow, what not). i might have to make one or two for demos (so as to not lose my good one :>)... next trick - using a condom to make a spherical lense and starting a fire :) i guess one could use a firesteel. those are pretty cool when you can find them for less than retail - just got two myself.

The brass tube is plugged with a bolt. The tube was threaded and epoxied. JBWeld might work.

I used a drill press to make my prototypes. Depends how good a craftsman you are, I suppose.
