I'm going to try some fireplace mortar to get better control over my temper line. Does the clay help reduce scale? I'm going to do some experiments anyway but wanted some other observations.

Thanks,

Try the stuff made for wood stoves. I'm not sure of the name(satanite?). I have seen spectacular hamon's resulting from it's use.

Mike I guess I'll have to order some satanite, can't find any around here. Lowe's and Home Depot have the fireplace stuff.

I wonder if there's some homemade stuff I could make. I got kiln clay, charcoal and some kaowool...

Why couldnt you just wrap wire around a piece of KoaWool leaving just the edge and tip exposed?

BB,
Never thought of that. The main reason I'm experimenting with the clay is that I want more control over the temperline. It's actually just one more thing for me to play around with in the ole fire. Never thought of wiring on the kaowool. I'm going to try that.

I use a fireplace wet mortar, called Sairset. Use it to repair my castable forges and for clay coating my blades. It is an excellent product. Comes in a 15lb. tub for around $14.00, bought locally at a fireplace shop.
