Firesteel and dryer lint

Here's something I discovered when playing around with the two - It would often take 5 or 6 strikes to light the lint. However, if I hake a strip of dryer lint about 1 inch long by 1.5 - 2 inches wide, lay it on top of the firesteel, and then put the striker on top of that and strike using the striker and lint together, it lights on the first strike every single time.

Dryer lint is a fantastic fire starter. I keep telling my wife that when she complains about how I save it in plastic bags, which then float around the laundry room.

Hey Guys...

Rich...

I agree with Rob H...
I've got the stuff floating around all over the place and catch flak for it all the time...

Not sure why it's doing that by probably because the sparks are more concentrated right at the steel..

It may also matter what your dryer lint consists of as well..
I usually grab it after a load of towels ...

I would think that cotton lint would work much better than polyester or other synthetics. Hemp would probably be alright too, although there aren't many clothes made of that these days (unfortunately, its supposedly much more durable than cotton). Of course, I'm no expert.

Oh, it is. (Hijack)

There are many reasons marijuana (and hemp) are regulated in this country. Its supposed dangers to the body and mind are actually minor in comparison to the other reasons the government pushed forward.

Biased source, but not biased on the stuff that matters (history, laws, etc.):

Synthetic dryer lint doesn't work near as well as cotton lint. I wash levi's and towels together so I can collect the cotton lint. Hemp is an excellent material for quite a few daily items. I have a shoulder bag made from the stuff and it's surprising how tough it is. Maybe I should wash it and collect some lint, so I can give it a try (as tinder). :D

To stray off topic, it all has to do with DuPont buying off Ashlinger (or is it Aslinger?) in the early 20th century *shakes head dissapprovingly*

white 100% cotton dryer lint works best. I also use cotton balls and grease'em up with a coat of vaseline. waterproofs them some what as well as assists with the fire flaming. Then I place them in some of those 35mm plastic film carriers. works real well!

heh, I sometimes take the heads off quetip's, stuffing out of old pillows, and yeah, cotton balls. I dont however mix anything with them, I like how they go up and have never had a problem getting a bundle of small twigs, dry grass to go up in smoke :D
