Firesteel Handle Customization?

I'm just about done with the two knives I posted a while back. I was going to do a matching firesteel with them but I can't figure out how to get the manufacturer's handle off without breaking the whole thing, or find a place that just sells the rods. If I am able to get a rod by itself, what is the best way to attach it to a new wood (bubinga) handle?

I've never done a firesteel, bit I'd drill a hole in the wood and epoxy it in

Drill the right size hole, clean with acetone, "rough" the rod a little bit (with a file or coarse sandpaper), epoxy the rod in the hole.

Bens Backwoods also sells ferro rods and then there are the misch metal rods from going gear. Those throw big long lasting sparks.

Buying the rods separate is a lot cheaper then de-handling an existing one

I buy my blanks for handeling from firesteel.com, since shipping is cheapest there.
