On leather sheaths, how do you makers add a loop for a fire steel? I'd like to give it a shot but I'm thinking if I skived it own, it might be too thin to be strong..... so..... anyone have some pointers on this?

Thanks!

You'll have to skiv it to the thickness of one layer of leather or make a double-layer welt to make it look clean.

The first one I did, the loop was separate and skivved. Took a bit of work since I don't have a skivving tool. :D

The 2nd one I did, the loop was part of the sheath body (the back side). I cut a section out of the welt, and the folded over loop simply took the place of the missing part of the welt.

The two others I've done, I simply stitched loops directly to the front face of the sheath.

I did similar on a BK2 sheath, I made the loop part of the welt and doubled the 7/8oz under the mouth. I did have to skiv a taper so the transition was not abrupt. Also, I needed the room for the large handle. Hope it helps. Here's a pic, this was a proto and I was hurrying when I laid my stitching out, so its a little off.Moose
