Will filing a 3/8 firesteel notch in the spine near the scales compromise the bk2 strength?

No. Or rather not enough to matter. It has been done in several variations, and none of them that I know of have catastrophically failed as of yet. I would say go for it, but your chances are better of it holding up if you post pics of course. Many pics. In high resolution. :D

O will becuz if I don't then it never happened. I was thinking of doing some jibbing on the spine with a firesteel notch in front and decorative file work on the tang. Ya know spruce her up a bit. Show her off, then beat her up.

As you might know, I've done it. The knife doesn't seem like it lost any of its tankiness. Jimping and a firesteel notch are a great way to improve the BK2.

5/8" wide and 1/8" deep.

From what I've seen it gives a larger spark and it wears better since the notch is the shape of the steel
