I just got a new fire piston, a Numyth, and I am impressed.

So, my question is, which one would you pick for an wilderness kit?

This isn't about survival, or anything like that, its just for a knife kit I been playing around with. The kit as it stand now, has a BK7 with some custom micarta handles, 20'+ foot of paracord, a tin that has 9 cotton balls in a straws, 25' of jute twine, and a 3/8"x4" Goingear mischmetal firesteel.

Its something I'm putting together for some hunting this year, and I've got he whole setup hanging from a paracord baldric I wove this weekend. :D

So, based on my skill level, I feel pretty confident in what I got.

But, this new fire piston has me intrigued, very much so. So far, I've had 20 successful attempts to get a substantial coal going, quickly and even one handed. :D

So, my question is, which skill would you go with, firesteel or fire piston?

If its just for giggles then I'd have to say the fire piston. They're just plain fun to use.

I think I'll take mind to work tomorrow, now you mention it, try and light a few cakes up with it.

Firesteel - I always thought I could shave some off and use it as tinder. If you can do this with the piston then it would be the option as you get the best of both worlds.

Well, tinder for this thing just grows on trees around here. :D

Plus, the Numyth has the ability to store tinder in a storage well, in the unit. I used it to make a fire to brew some tea this afternoon. Such an fun little item, I swear.

The O ring is a potential problem, maybe it gets left in a closed auto on a hot day, maybe it gets damaged by grit.Sounds like a cool toy to have, but gimme a firesteel or flint and steel.

The O-ring would be my concern also. They are cool items and work well but if I was going to use one as a primary fire start I would carry a fire steel as back up.
