Very noob-ish question:
I've searched around a bit but not seeing anything conclusive on the topic. Is there any difference in standard, cheap firesteel and the 15 to 20 dollar ones? Not talking about anything gadgety like orange handles, paracord, or springloaded stuff...just the rods themselves.

Much appreciated! Take care.

There are differing degrees to the ingredients, leading to some producing more sparks, whereas others produce more of a molten glob of burning awesomeness.

Welcome to the Becker forum and Blade forums.

In general, most firesteel come in levels of hardness, and this is what denotes what kind of performance you get. Like what Derek said. Harder steels like the LMF create "sparks" and the GoinGear rods are typically softer, resulting in more material coming off the rod, producing globs.

In all honesty, your striker makes a big difference, as, LMF firesteels will produce globs of molten metal, if you use the right striker. There are several brands out there, and usually for the money, you can get one of each to try, and then make up your own mind, as to which one you like the most, and which one fits your style and needs.

I know you want just a blank rod but I like the strike force fire steel set up. Although I do want to get some blanks myself. IDK I'm kinda weired. :) I just like to play with fire. :D

Blank rods are pretty cheap. Honestly, size and striker makes more difference.

Get a 3/8" rod and hit it with a bastard file - that'll throw a spark or two.

This, I've been using a strike force for 4 years. It's pretty big, though there is a spot in the back for some wet tinder. I would classify it as more of a molten glob thrower.

All noted, and all input appreciated!

At least finding out which I like best is going to be fun! :D

Thanks again!
