Would like to get a good firesteel from someone on BF and support them rather than buy off ebay. So my question is who is the person to go to for a good firesteel around here? Thanks in advance for the info.

Light-my-fire are really good. I forget the name of the other company but they make the Omega XL aluminum container that is pretty popular. I got mine from them at the Bladeshow.

Awesome, I will def. check them out then. Thought about buying the esee kit but that seems overpriced imo.

The Firesteel "ARMY" model can be found delivered for $10 if you shop carefully and don't care about the color. At that price, it is hard to go wrong adding one to your kit.

The Exotac NanoStriker Firestarter is a good buy if you find one at a local knife or hunting show.

There used to be a company GoingGear. GoingGear.com and they participated here on BF. They sold some good firesteels/ferro rods. Check out their stuff.

+1 I got a larger size firesteel from them, it works very well and Storl is a member here.

Awesome guys thanks for the suggestions! I just wanted some feedback from people who probably use them more than anyone I can think of. I checked out goinggear and just ordered a rod from them. Looks to be solid!

What type of handle would you all put on your ferro rod? I was just going to make a simple handle for it.

Largely a matter of personal preference. Hard plastic or stone, maybe hardwood of some sort. Get yourself the right drillbit and some good strong two part epoxy and you'll be in business. I'm thinking some type of large bead like a Filmo bead or a macrame bead might fit the bill. Maybe a visit to a local craft store is in order. Let us know what you come up with.

Firesteel.com is where I got mine, and it's great. I got the gobspark lanyard kit that has a thick firesteel with plastic handle and lanyard attached scraper. It was only 12 bucks at the time too(only two years ago)!

I just picked up a rod and planned on just shaping a handle for it. Just wanted to see what people normally do with them.

Sounds like a plan. Get a nice little piece of hardwood or other durable material. Rough up the end of the rod that will extend into the handle with a file or something. That will help the epoxy to stick better. Maybe consider drilling a lanyard hole in the end of the handle. Enjoy.

I'll post pics as soon as it comes in and I get a handle on it. Thanks for all the suggestions guys. It's much appreciated.
