Does anybody have any experience with this item? If the Firestone chops almost as well a Gransfor Bruk hatchet, and has the advantages of being stainless and having a belt swivel sheath -- it might a worthy item.

The prices that I've seen seem awfully high or I would have bought one already. It particularly looks good for quartering game.

Yes, the price does seem high, especially at full retail ($150). BUT...how many of us have shelled out that much for a big-ass bowie that doesn't chop wood as well as a hatchet, or for "tactical" folder that doesn't chop at all?

My thinking is, instead of a big-ass bowie, pack a hatchet and a useful size knife, say a 4-5 inch fixed blade. Leave the Iron Mistress at camp to admire later.

Further, internet pricing is much more reasonable (saw your page, Fred) and isn't much more than my what my Gransfor hatchet cost whilst having the advantage of a belt sheath and being stainless. I bought the Gransfor for looks and found out that in fact a $65 hatchet will far outperform the eight dollar hatchet from Wal-Mart.

I have a suspicion though that the Firestone is not selling like hot cakes.

I would vote for the Gransfors if your primary use is chopping. The handle is longer and you'll get a better swing. I've owned a lot of hatchets over the years and the Gransfors are truly in a class of their own. I never realized it until I handled them. Wonderful tools. The Firestone cost twice as much and IMO,is not comparable to the Gransfors. Also, I prefer the solid hickory handle to the Firestone laminated handle. However, if skinning is your thing, go with the Firestone. It should excel at that. The handle is short and clubby for such a big head and will minimize your leverage for chopping but it should give you nice control for skinning a moose or elk. It's a bit much for skinning a deer. I'd rather use a Marble Woodcraft for a deer. Also in favor of the Firestone is that its shortness does make it a little easier to stow in a pack.

And so, to all outdoor folks, the knife is the most important item of equipment.
