Finally finished my first 3 knives. The wharnie’s are 3/16th 1095 and the boning/filet knife is 1/16th 1095 as is the one I broke to test the hardness. They were stock removal & shaped with just about everything; 4” belt sander, 1” Harbor freight sander, files, hacksaw, dremel tool, drum sender and angle grinder. Heat treat was wood fire assisted by a gas lawn blower using a visual color scale for a 5 minute soak and quenched in McMaster Carr 11 second quenching oil heated to around 150’F. Tempering was done in the house oven between 2 aluminum ¼ sheet pans to help stabilize the ovens natural cycle around 375’F for 2 hour and a half cycles. The wood is all dymondwood, 1/16Th “pins up front, hidden ¼” pin about mid section and the thong tubes are the same ¼” brass rod that I made into thong tube with a drill press and I used Loctite 5 minute epoxy. They ain’t perfect but they are users. I just want to thank Jason Carter for the moral support and Kevin for the stickies with all the info.
Leather is mine too.

That's awesome, Oldschool45! Keep it up. Uh Oh, looks like you lost one in the quench:eek:

Edro20, Thanks.
The loss was bitter sweet, yeah I lost a blade but it proved that the steel had hardened. My previous attempt at hardening didn’t get hot enough and the blades didn’t harden. What amazes me is how much flex I can get out of the boning knife after tempering. I can almost get a 90’ bend out of that blade on the cutting board.
I’m looking to make 4 more kitchen knives as Christmas presents. A few hardened 1084 beer bottle openers (monogrammed) and a 1084 wannabe washiki for my self.

Very good looking knives for your first attempts. My first knife that I made was raffled off for a good cause.
