Hello everyone, been awhile since I posted. I now have 5 blades I need to send off for HT. I think I'm going to send them to Texas Knife unless someone has a better option. I obviously want it done right but want to keep my costs down as much as possible.

I also wanted to double check on my blade's edge thickness before sending it off. I believe I'm suppose to leave around a dime's width on the cutting edge before sending it off. If I have a little more or less will it end up being a big deal?

I'll see if I can't get some pics posted soon. They are nothing fancy but were fun to make. Thanks everyone for all your help.

I usually heat treat at 0.03" or 1/32" at the edge and then go back to the grinder after heat treating to remove discoloration or decarb. That's going to be thinner than the edge of a dime. However, most newer makers will leave their edges thicker than that when starting out (I know I did). Remember that you'll need to thin them down after heat treating to be able to get good edge geometry. If you're using files, you'll need to thin them out BEFORE heat treating.

I sent my first blades to TKS and this last set I sent to Peters Heat treat, I will be using Peters from now on, they did an awesome job!

depending on what steels you have, TKS will not be able to do them justice. they will only do air hardening steels. what steels are you using?

TKS ALWAYS did an awesome job for me.Price is very reasonable and turnaround was about 7 working days.Print out their sheet and send it along. They dont do oil quench steel, just stainless. They have it all listed out.I sent a few with too thin an edge. Its not the end of the world.Just grind it back a bit. That was my experience anyhow.Good luck.

Does Peters heat treat do oil quench steels?

I have a bit 5160 chopper that some day I will finish sanding the scratches out of, and send out (promise!).

11 inch blade, 7 inch handle.

too big for my back yard heat treat skills!

i used Del Ealy from Ealy knives, good deal and fast turn around. (EDITED, they were all oil quench O1 steel knives)

I'd send them to Peter's.

The will do oil quench steels up to a certain length.
