Well, after something like a ten year hiatus, I'm finally in a situation to start knife making as a hobby. Here's a picture of my first "I'm back at it" knife:

Thanks, guys

No blood was drawn in the process. I call it my "bird & trout."

Overall length: 7 1/4"
Blade length: 3 1/8" (cutting edge about 2 1/8" plus 1" choil)
Blade steel: HR1095 stock, 1/8" thick. I heat-treated it myself and it's still a little too hard. Oh well, the next one will be tempered better. I heat treated it with a propane-fired furnace lined with ash and clay. The quench was in heated corn oil, discarded from cooking.

It's a hidden, stub tang epoxied about halfway into the black ABS handle. The guard is cut from 3/8" brass stock and soldered on with silver solder. The spacers are plastic (white) and leather. The thong hole is brass tubing.

By the way, thanks to all who provided tips and advice (there are many on this bulletin board and many others, plus web sites I referenced.) Everyone has been really helpful with suggestions!

Thanks!

My next project is a full tang, scaled "wilderness-type knife."
