Hi everyone,

Last week I had my final examination and passed for the theoretical and more important, the practical part of the official Dutch first aid course.
As of today I carry an ID that identifies me as certified in giving First Aid.
It took some 16 evenings to get it and in order to keep certified it it will take at least 8 practice evenings a year.

Because I work with kids in my free time I just followed it because I wanted to know more about giving "First Aid" correctly.

I learned a lot and I can really advise anybody to follow these kind of training courses.
Applying CPR correctly, AFTER identifying if a person NEEDS it, the Heimlich "grip(s)" when somebody is choking, stopping heavy bleedings by pressure bandages and or applying pressureat at the correct place and arterie is something that everybody should know. It could save somebodies life in the (near) future.

In short, go enscribe yourself for such a first aid course it's worth the money and time, because a life is much more valuable.

Cheers,

Bagheera

Bagheera, I've been through first aid a few times (highschool Driver's Education, SCUBA certificate, OCS, and taking it on my own). It truly is very useful.

Bagheera, Congratulations on your successful completion of a very valuable course! I'm sure that the parents of the children you work with take great comfort in your certification. Also, I'd like to thank you for raising the topic. It is important and a lot of us might not even think about it.

Any one looking for first aid trainning can contact their local RED CROSS (or crescent, or lion, or star- depending on your location.) They usually offer a weekend class at least once a month for a nominal fee. The International Red Cross organizations have a long history and they set the standards for most trainning programs, both private and government.

If you want more intense trainning, you can check your local Vo-tech school. They usually offer night courses for adults. This is where our local firefighters get their Emergency Medical and Paramedic trainning. You can ask a member of the local FD where they train.

Another great option is to convince your employer to sponsor first aid trainning at work. Benefits to employer: 1)Lower Worker's Comp. insurance rates. 2)Shows the employees they really care. Benefits to you: 1)You don't have to pay for the trainning. 2)You look like a real go-getter. 3) If you ever need first aid one of your co-workers will know what to do. Win-win, everybody's happy!
