Guys,

Here is my first attempt at forging a hawk. Started with 3/4" 52100 round bar and went from there thanks to help from Bruce Evans video I think it turned out OK the blade seems a little long and the spike maybe a little short. Comments appriciated. Thanks for looking Tim

Tim,
Nice line on the hawk. I think you could say, if compared to contemporary hawks, that the blade was a little long, but on second look, I think it goes well with the handle and the copper wire wrap. In a couple of months, when the copper takes on some patina, it will look; Classic.

Looks real good Tim! One of the great things about hawks is there are really no hard fast design rules. If you wanted the blade shorter then just do a little upsetting as you draw it out. That will widen it out and it will not be as long. As your upsetting you can also work up a "beard" either on the top or bottom.

Cool, and there fun too ain't they?:D 52100? That can be some dificult material to forge, looks like you nailed it. One thing about the narrow poll I've found is that even with a perfect fit with the handle it tends to loosen with hard use. Not come off, but a little wiggle that drives me crazy. Only thing I can think to fix it is a widder poll.

Thanks for the comment folks I'm getting some 1"+ 5160 for the next one so it will be wider around the eye the 52100 seems to make a really solid blade I've done a little chopping with it and the edge seems to hold up well still shaving sharp
