Just whipped this up this morning...
not done yet, still got some rough spots, needs more work definatly, but was very pleased with myself and wanted to show off a little.

Always done tactical-ish stuff... lately its been pure tactical, no "ish" to it... but never tried "radical tactical"... but I spent too much time looking at pictures Steve Ryan's work... and suddenly had an impulse to see what I could do. I aint no Ryan thats for sure.. but I like what I did. :)

Specs: 9 inches overall, 5 inch blade, 3/16" ATS-34.

Couple questions tho... it has the *tinyest* bit of warp... Whats the best way to get that out??

And... this is the first blade I've done with ATS-34... can I H/T this myself (I dont have anything like a PAragon furnace) or should I get it done by a pro once I am ready?

Thanks :D

okay... the pic thing should be taken care of now...

let me know if it doesnt show up or something... *walks off cursing image hosting serices*

Thats definitely something different. Looks pretty neat, great for poking holes in stuff. One suggestion though, I think the primary edge ( I'm judging this by the finger notch in the handle)needs to be sharp all the way to the point. Keep it hooked like that but bring the bevel clear around. Otherwise you really limit the cutting ability.
Just something to consider. Was it hard to grind?

Actually, amazingly, it wasnt hard to grind at all.

Never tried something like this before, because I always thought, urggh too hard, cant do it.. but its actually not that hard.

Am better at grinding curvy stuff that straight lines anyway... might have a new trend for me here. :)

ATS-34 requires top notch heat treat to be anywhere near effective. If you don't have the proper equiptment definately send it out.BTW,where is the warpage you mentioned located?

the warp is in the tang/handle. Starts almost right at the back of the finger notch, looking down on it from the top, it warps to the left.

Thanks :D

Another question...

Anyone reccomend who could H/T this blade?
I've got a 154-CM blade thats nearly ready for H.t as well... would be nice to get them both done at the same time.
But it'd be just those two... no more, so not like a bulk bunch.

D'Alton Holder,Oxygen free, look in K&G's catalog for his addy. I've heard, but dont know for sure, that he just amasses knives then sends them to Paul Bos. Anyone know if that is true? Texas knifemakers also does a good HT on ATS, foil wrap some discoloration to remove.

I truely do not mean to be rude or discouraging but you have got to be kidding with that thing!

To paraphrase "The Dude", Obviously you're not a Steve Ryan fan...

Okay... yeah its inspired by the radical work of makers like Steve Ryan (Obviously)...

I, personally, feel that such designs have potential as a fighting knife in the right hands.

Personally... I always liked Thumpers mothers rule "If ya cant say something nice..." and so on..

Ah well... maybe I take things to hard... constructive critisism I can take...and its not discouraging at all...
Non constructive critisism... well... sometimes thats a different matter.

never said anyone had to like it actually... and it is an open discussion board..

Ahh well... I s'pose there's plenty I dont like as well... just not as vocal about it as others are.

L6steel:

It would be good to try to show a little respect for someone else's work.

[edited because i overreacted :(]

no guy's, D' holder does batch together blades, from knife maker's but he does not send them to paul bos. there is a noticable yellowish from D.and purple color from paul. on ATS-34 blades, there's a differntist in color.

Morgan, I have never seen a Steve Ryan knife that I know of. If theres a niche for that style of knife, more power to ya! You have to admit it is a strange pattern.I appologize if my reaction was too harsh.
Pyro, if I post a pic of a piece of junk knife, no reference intended, I expect someone to have the kindness to tell me so. Thats what this forum is for.

L6Steel...

Sorry if my own reaction was a bit harsh... I should be better about not letting things get to me.

(If you are curious about some of Ryan's work so you know what I am talking about...

I find it interesting... and I also find such radical styles challenging.... altho I am not trying to copy anyone elses designs... simply trying out different idea's.

It looks to me like the bevel is ground all the way to the tip...it just has that flat section and the light makes it look like that part isn't ground.

It looks like a rope/line cutter to me...definitely different...and different always keeps us looking in new directions :)

As far as D'Holder, I sent some to him before and he told me that he takes them to a company that heat-treats golf-clubs somewhere near his home. Sounds kinda funky, but the knives have held up well.

I can also very confidently recommend Paul Bos.

Unless you have a heat-treat oven and nitrogen tank, I wouldn't recommend hardening ATS yourself.

Good luck!
Nick

Hi,
It definitely has a Ryan look to it.

I wonder if Sylvester hasn't named it for you:
...it comes up as forbidden
Forbidden, I think it fits.

Let us see what it looks like when finished.
Regards,
Greg

Hey.. ya know what... thats a great name! :D
"Forbidden" has a nice ring to it...
Thanks! :D ( I had jokingly been calling it Betsy The Sheeple Friendly Knife... but Forbidden... mmmm... very nice)

And yes, NickWheeler is right, the curved edge bevel stops and the bevel on the front part is a seperate grind (like on an American Tanto point) but both are fully ground, and the cutting edge will be continuos once I do the final edge grind.

I am wondering, how good is the H/T offerend by Texas Knife Supply?
I've gotten good service from them ordering supplies, and I'm one of these people that likes to keep patronizing folks once they've shown themselves to be good to me. Just kinda wondering how well their heat treat turns out...
