Well, this was my first shot at a sheath. I used a med Brown for the sheath, a light tan for the belt loop and dark brown stitching.
My only other experience working leather was a pendant I made for the Misses' keychain with our daughters bday burned into it and only about a inch of stitching for the key ring.

Let me know what you think and if you have any advice for a beginner.

I was going to try wet forming it but it isn't needed, the pressure is just right as it sits now.

Thanks,
Bill

Just bulk scrap from hobby lobby, an exacto knife, 4 hole punch, needles and waxed thread... Not much yet, but from the looks of it, I think I am going to be investing more coin.

Speaking of investing more money, I am always on the lookout for a sheepsfoot sodbuster in 01 if you know of any. Lol.
I love my regular ones.

I know the bags, I don't remember seeing veg tanned. The chromium stuff may be okay for a folder with a stainless blade (I really don't know), but you want veg tanned against that o1. If you have a Tandy near they can hook you up.

As for HL, they actually have some good tools. The stamps in the tubes (Real Leather re-brand of Hide Crafter tools) are nice and well priced. The stitch spacer kit is another good buy. Can't stamp chrome tanned though. I found a sheet of 40% off coupons in my local phone book. Makes those purchases a steal.

Honestly, the leather will hold you back in terms of tooling and finishing (burnishing edges for example). Get yourself some 7/8oz or 8/9oz veg tanned and you're ready to rock. :)

Ok, well I had just read up on aluminum tanned and my knife isn't going back in that aside from using it for making practice sheaths.
Thank you for the heads up.

I just placed an order on tandy for 2 bellies, some extra needles and a stitch spacer. Now to head to hobby lobby tomorrow and grab some stamps to practice with. I know the stamps won't show well on this leather, but at least I can see how they handle and get my first few boogers out of the way.

Thanks again,
Bill
