I've been trying to find a way to EDU my Mora classics for a while now, finally decided to break down and buy some Kydex. The factory sheathes (black plastic) area no go for IWB and have inconsistent retention. The leather ones are nice, but I prefer the beefier grip of the plain carbon knives to the laminated ones, and the plain carbon don't fit the lam sheath very well.
I've modified a number of my other Kydex sheathes by lining them with waxed leather. I can get some very good retention on designs that are otherwise kindof difficult with straight Kydex (puukkos) using this method, and it also does a great job of keeping my carbon blades from rusting. It protects against incidental scratching or dulling of the knife blade on the Kydex when using for EDC as well. I find a lot of sheathing and drawing definitely results in unappreciated wear depending on the fit and configuration.
Well, they're a bit ugly but very functional. I used aluminum nails and heavy copper wiring for the rivets. Would have used the stock rivets or Chicago screws, but wasn't sure how thick things would be with the leather and Kydex, or how much leeway you get. I've already got a ton of odd hardware rolling around my shop, don't need any more
.
Just have to attach some IWB loops and I'm in business. I hesitate to post 'em here as the workmanship is mighty rough, but aside from some really rough ones for my machetes they're the only ones I've made from scratch.
Ahh, I really like my wood handled Moras...
