Hi all. I have been reading up on and off on knife making for a few years and I decided to get started this week. At work I have access to a couple of burr king 2x60 belt grinders and some flat disk grinders and some bench grinding wheels. There are some limitations though. I'm not sure if they would be happy with me changing the belts to a finer grit, and more limiting, there is no platen to push against. But ll better than nothing.
So I drew up a pattern and started grinding the profile. I thought I would start the bevel on the grinders and finish with files.
Here is the work so far. I am using 01 tool steel and the piece I got had enough left over for another one so i figured I may as well make two.

Comments are welcome.

Looking pretty good so far, I would keep the straight back on the top one so you have 2 different designs...then you can choose which one you like the best. Keep it up!

Here is my updated progress. I know it's not much farther than before, but I have been trying various ways to hold and file it. I found a comfortable way to file this morning and it makes a huge difference. So things should move along a little faster now.
I am going to make at least four of this design, with some variation obviously.

Then I am going to try my hand at making leather sheathes for them.

Any comments are welcome.

I thank you all for being such a great resource of information.

Keep up the good work. Fun isn't it? :D

It is getting fun now that I have a better workflow. I started a few so I could get a good method down and it will be cheaper at the heat treater.
