First attempts at forging

Finally decided to go out in the shop with my father and try and forge some damascus. I ended up using some steel that was already forge welded in a big block (1084 and 15n20), so I cut off a peice and tried to draw it out. I put it in the forge and started up the 150 pound air hammer. I destroyed that one. I then cut off another peice from the block and tried again. It started out better and then became a mangled peice of ugly. The next try it came out nice and square. My dad then told me I was going to make a twist pattern so I needed to make it octagonal. Well, it wasn't long until that was looking pretty bad, so he fixed it for me. Then, we twisted it, then I drew it out until it was a nice looking peice of steel. Then, I ground it and etched it and came up with this: http://free.hostdepartment.com/b/bloosh/firstdamascus.jpg Of course, this is a scan, so it looks really ugly, and I only did a little square of it so it wouldn't be very big. Hint: You might need to right click and go to save target as to get the picture as it will give you an access denied or forbidden page.

That looks pretty good, Larrin. When you make it into a knife, post a pic in the ShopTalk forum. Love to see it there.

Was this a result of the demonstration at Blade? Glad to see you made it there. ;)
