Finally decided to go out in the shop with my father and try and forge some damascus. I ended up using some steel that was already forge welded in a big block (1084 and 15n20), so I cut off a peice and tried to draw it out. I put it in the forge and started up the 150 pound air hammer. I destroyed that one. I then cut off another peice from the block and tried again. It started out better and then became a mangled peice of ugly. The next try it came out nice and square. My dad then told me I was going to make a twist pattern so I needed to make it octagonal. Well, it wasn't long until that was looking pretty bad, so he fixed it for me. Then, we twisted it, then I drew it out until it was a nice looking peice of steel. Then, I ground it and etched it and came up with this: http://free.hostdepartment.com/b/bloosh/firstdamascus.jpg Of course, this is a scan, so it looks really ugly, and I only did a little square of it so it wouldn't be very big.
