Broke the haft on this thing several years back. After looking at some threads here, decided to try my hand at hanging it. There are some gaps in there. Should I make another run at it or let it ride?
Just a no name axe, but I've had it for a long time. The haft is 36".
I would at least drive a couple of "spike wedges" in to take up the slack. Almost all of the impact when chopping is going right into those voids, which can't be good over time.
Also, one of the best days in recent memory was when I took the advice I got on here to drill out my wedge and try again I did it, and the hang came out much better.
I'm still learning this stuff, but for my next hang I am going to incorporate some very good advice I have received here: shape the wedge first to fit the eye in order to eliminate the gaps front and back.
There are some pretty incredible forces going perpendicular to the cutting edge with the wedge driven tight, and given that the eye is tapered/tear drop shaped, I never did worry about having a gap in the front unless it was large enough that I was losing any wedging action on the handle, which seems to be the end all be all in a secure hang.
