O.k. I'm new to Axe collecting and am quickly running out of money. I've purchased a few neat pieces and mini hatchets, but haven't been able to buy an affordable hudson bay camp axe yet. So I decided to make one. It started life as a 3 1/2# single bit that my son and I picked up for $4 at a local flea market. With the help of a good metal cutting bandsaw we removed what didn't look like a hudson bay axe. Strictly guessing on what weight we would have left. After the belt sander and Parkerizing tank we ended up with a nice little 1 3/4# axe head. After fitting it to a 36" full size single bit handle, we decided it was way too long and cut it off at 27". Refinished the handle with Lineseed oil and paracord and here you go. Total investment $12 and 2 hours of labor. Please let me know what you think I can do different as I will be doing this again. Pardon the iffy photos, its my first time.

Thanks and yes, the metal cutting bandsaw cut the blade very slowly. The temperature of the blade never got above comfortable to hold in your bare hands.

i've done several of these Hudson Bay re-profiles.
i cut the meat away with a cut off wheel.l keep the bit cool by dunking it in water after a little cutting.

your Hudson Bay looks good to me.
also i usually cut the handles down too. the balance is better this way.

i've had good luck doing this with old bits

I desperately need a belt sander. Any suggestions? Really nice work on the HB profile...

Glad to see you post this Matt, very nice job. Your axe has a very nice heat treat line.

Now you are all loaded up for the 2 handed tomahawk throw.

Thanks Pat, I'll bring it in on Monday for show and tell.

Broady, The belt sander that I use the most is a 6x48 with a good belt. I'll have to look up the brand and grit of the belt, but it cuts quick and cool.
