First Balisong desired

OK!! The time has come. I must buy a balisong. Feel this great desire to play with one and have it be my own.

For a long time I have shunned the balisong in favor of the one-handed tactical folding knife. Now, while I am not giving these up by any means, I want to add the balisong to my repetoire. To start branching out.

What I want isn't some cheapo balisong, I want to get a decent to top quality production balisong to start myself on my way.

I know, of course, the difference between a good knife and a not-so-good knife. From reading here, I've added to my knowledge.

Now, what I am looking for are recommendations on a good starter knife. I would like to get something good to learn on, but not so good that I wouldn't want to for fear of damaging it.

My thoughts fluctuate between finding a BM or PC knife that is decent and carry worthy, or buying something like a Jag or Bear that wouldn't matter so much if I abused or damaged it.

What are the opinions on this? I'm kinda sorta looking for an excuse to buy a nice knife....lol.

Anyway, on to BM or PC. If I were to start in this bracket, what would be the ideal model to begin with(or at least, easiest to get my hands on).

Thanks for the help guys, and sorry about the post length.

Here's the deal!!! BM has a balisong in production right now. It's the model 42 and my recommendation. I've flipped a Bear in a store before and wasn't too impressed with the handles on it. I used to own a jaguar about 7 or 8 years ago and can tell you that they aren't really worth it. That is purely my unprofessional opinion though. :P The older BM's and PC's are nice (I've never actually handled the 45 or one similar), but I would recommend not getting any with zamak handles...they just don't hold up too well. I think the 42 is what you're looking for. Good luck to you.

Gotta get a BM 42, they are the most available, quality, and tough (Ti handles) balisongs around. It'll run you around $100

Go with the Benchmade 42. You won't be sorry you paid the $100+ pricetag.

And as for abuse, this is about the only one out there at the moment that can take it.

A 42 would be great, but if you think you will be droping it a lot, get a Bear. That way you can practice on one that is kind of light, and then move on to the 42 when you think your good enough not to drop it.

Order the 42 now, then look for the Bear, you will still probably receve the Bear first.

Good luck, and welcome to the club!

I'll give another vote for the 42! I have 2 and they are well worth the money.

I look at it this way:
A Bali is MEANT to take more "abuse" than a standard folder. A half hour of flipping cycles the pivots on my 42 more times than a month's worth of openings and closings of my daily carry (BM705).
"If you flip it, you will drop it" also "If you flip it, you will bang it into something" are words to live by too. I don't expect a Bali to look NIB for long.

The 42 features quality materials well crafted. With basic maintainence, it will last you as long as you want to enjoy it. If it's in your price range, go for it!

my BM42 gets banged up quite a lot and I think I only have one really really small dent and a few very very minor knicks in it. Then there are some scratches that can only be seen if the light hits it at just the right angle. and this is after 4 months of daily use, mind you.

GET IT!

Ok!!! I went to my local NCCA show in Marlboro, MA today. While there I ran into Frank Castle from our very own Forums. He happened to have a BM-42 for sale. After deciding between that and a MT/LCC (a tough choice) I decided on the BM. Ever since then, I have only wanted to flip it.

Obviously, having just purchased it, I'm not so good. But, with practice, I hope to be better soon. I want to at least be able to competently use it.

Thanks for all of your advice. Can't wait to play with it some more (the knife, of course).
