I’ve had my grinder for a little over a month now and after practicing on a bunch (lots and lots) of mild steel, I am fairly confident now in my abilities. I still need to work on scratch line refinement and could use a file guide for plunge lines but have done my first batch of blades. I’ve got a friends who will be letting me use his kiln for heat treat. What do you think?

Wow... thats a lot of knives for a first batch! Some shapes or not my tast but i like the one in the middle.

A fileguide made my results instantly better. It makes it much more easy to make a nice sharp plungeline. If thats what you want of course...

I made mine myself. Made two... this is the small one for folders. I also have a bigger one for fixed knives. Or really big folders...:D

Cant seem to get the picture to show... this is the link..

I suggest you make one and harden it when you go and harden the knives. It makes the job so much easier.

Good luck!

Thanks, I’ve got a thick piece of 1080 and will be making one today. I tried using a piece of electrical tape with some success, it actually gave me fairly round plunges which can be seen on the Canadian belt knife clone.

Traditional use. It’s essentially my take on a modern snow knife.

A snow knife is like a short sword. It has a read bolster for strength and balance, and a dropped handle for gripping while wearing gloves.
Your blade has a sword handle on a kitchen knife. It will be too handle heavy to use comfortably. If you cut/ground it off just at the three holes and reshaped the end more like knife #2 it will work much better.

The kitchen knife in the center is the best of the lot, and the smaller kitchen knife just above and to its right is second best.

In the beginning, try to avoid making large batches of blades. You may repeat the same errors many times that way. It is better to learn one or two blades at a time. As you complete each knife you will have learned new skills and information to improve the next. Making large batches in the beginning may reinforce a wrong idea or poor technique. … making it harder to unlearn later on
