So I just got my very first batch of bought steel in and wondering if there is any known difference in the edge prieces of the sheet. Since we all read when heat treating the you need to be careful of the heat on the edge, is there any difference in the steel when you get and edge pixie from a sheet? Just bought 3 sticks of 1084 and just wondering if I need to know anything considering 2/3rds of my order came in as edge pieces.

if they came from Aldo, no

Thanks for your reply, yes they did. Want to be clear, only asking because I don't know. They look great, straight flat and even, But just wanted to ask as one without knowledge. So I should be good to use that edge on the edge side of a knife vs. the spine? No difference at all?

The talk of the edge is usually folks saying not to
overheat the edge which can ruin the temper
and cause edge holding issues. Don't worry too much about heat until after you have heat treated the blade. If you temper at 400 then you want to keep the edge under 400.

I'm aware of that, but wanted to verify if there were any known issues getting the edge of a sheet vs pieces from the middle.

In many cases, all the pieces have an edge. It is sheared from a large sheet. The funny edge is caused by the shear. Generally, it isn't an issue.

IIRC, Aldo now cuts most his steel on a big band saw, so the edges are all the same.

These have bandsaw cuts except 2 pieces are the edge from the mill on 2 of them not sheared or cut, the rounded edge from the foundry.

OK, that is still good steel. If you want to be super cautious, just use that side for the spine.

Thank for the input Stacy. I'm sure it's good as I a haven't been able to find any posts on it, but I must say for my first order I do feel like I just went to make a sandwich and someone only left the 2 end pieces. A little disappointed, but it'll still make a sandwich. Lol.

Sometimes there is a dimensional difference as the rollers do flex and the edge pieces may be thinner than the center pieces..In thin precision rolling you may have ,on each side , a roller , then two rollers to support that ,then two rollers to support each of those rollers !!!

I have never had an issue of any sort with Aldo's steel. I have purchased 1084 from other suppliers, and not all are the same quality.

You are overthinking this. The steel is the same on the edges of the sheet as it is in the center. Outer edge side, sheared edge, or sawn edge - it is all good 1084 ( or whatever).

The only edges you need to be concerned with are ones cut with a laser, plasma cutter, or torch. These will have a HAZ that goes in a bit from the edge. The entire edge will need to be ground away by between 1/16" and 1/8".
