I got my first becker earlier this week, from CRKS and today I took it to a hike with me. First impressions, is that the handles are much more comfortable than I thought. I always thought they were big and blocky, but it is far from that.

here's some pics from the hike

rattler, big and fat! She was just laying there when I came around a curve. She didn't rattle when I first saw her, but as I was going around, she started to get nervous. Good thing there was a big walk space.

chopped some, batoned some, it was good. The handles got a little loose in the process... but that can be fixed.

These flowers were actually midnight-like colors, like those glow in the dark stuff, but my camera wanted it to be white. :(

Overall, I really like this blade, it is balanced, tough, and still workable after chopping and batoning. It rattled in sheath, so I stuck a few sheets of paper. It works!

Great pics looks like you had a good time. I think that I would have problems sleeping knowing that big fat snake is around.

I almost stepped on a rattler like that picking blackberrys last year...it ended up dead.

ooo you got lucky, I always keep a good distance away from them, don't need any of them biting me. I see snakes every time I'm there, I saw a black rat snake curled up on a tree, but as I got closer, it vanished. :grumpy:

Its never nice to see one about 3 feet from you.

Would you be talking about a Black racer (Florida lingo)? I caught one not too long ago...I relocated it..they are FAST!

Why did you bring a dumbell?

I also like the BK7 on the hydration pack. lol. Maybe I'm just unlucky, but I fi did that, somehow a hole would end up in the pack.

There's a reason for the rattler being on the "Dont tread on me" flag. Dont mess with the rattler and it wont bother you. Threaten it and it will warn you, attack it and it will strike back. Just like America. Amen.

I didn't even think about the hydro pack until you mentioned it. LOL. wow.. I guess my mind was on the food.

hehee!! I never had to carry over 10lbs so I wanted to try it......... it was hell. I had to stop every 40 minutes for a drink in the hot sun. Ah....I probably won't try this again, but on the other hand, I don't feel any back pain today. :)

rmc85- It could be that, is that a juvenile? The one I saw was fatter than that, so I assumed it was a black rat.

This is the only pic that was clear enough. I was about 5-6 yards away with this shot. I went in closer, looked down, looked up, POOF! Nothing.

Looks kind of the same but thats a HUGE one if its a Racer. IIRC they can get to almost 80 inches so I guess it could be the same thing...

You have some beautiful snakes where you live. That is definitely a black racer, the one you are holding. they were all over when we were stationed in florida. They like to climb through chickenwire fences. Can't believe that rattler just sat there... musta just eaten. The rattlers we had in Texas were usually much more active and aggressive. Don't start adding too much weight. At 17 I started rucking real hard to prepare myself for the military, got to the point where I was doing a 7 mile run every Friday with a 65 pound ruck. I steadily progressed heavier and heavier from there up to more than 100 pounds, and developed artheritis in both hips. If you live with a 60 pound pack on your back, you feel so much ridiculously lighter once you take it off... As for the fat snake in the tree, it is definitely a constrictor. The way it's coiled up like that makes me think with 95% certainty it is a relative of the python and boas. That is one honkin snake.

Definitely two different species. But let me bow to your catlike reflexes. I could never, on my best day, catch a racer, and I've seen more than my share. (Florida boy originally.)

I just got my first Becker last week, same one. Haven't got a chance to take it out yet, too busy with work. I did get to use it at work one day though very comfortable for chopping. I'm kinda pissed I didn't get to go backpacking at all this summer, but I'll get a chance in the winter, hopefully, and I'll probably take that knife with me. Those are some good snake pictures too. I almost got bit last year on the ankle, I think it was a copperhead; it caught me right at the top of the boot but didn't go all the way through, I almost crapped my pants.
