First Becker. Handle Grip/Stippling Pattern?

Hi everyone, I'm finally joining the club. I first saw these two years ago and immediately wanted the BK7 but didn't have a reason to, but I just got around to ordering my first Becker.

I'm going to attach a wrist lanyard, but I am worried about the smooth grip as a lot of people reiterate here. I'm going to avoid getting new scales for now because I might like to use the hollowed scales as a stash for tinder or some other small last resort supplies. So far I've seen paracord wrap around the handle, ranger bands or inner tubing around the handle, and home made stippling with a soldering iron.

I'm trying to decide how I want to add grip and what everyone likes on theirs. If it's stippling, are there any patterns that work better or is that more personal taste?

Hmmmmm... welcome to the BKT forum, and congrats on the new steel.

I say, start with the less invasive and less permanent. Try the inner tube/ranger band thing first. If you don't like it, then you can move on to the stippling.

Once again, welcome.

Moose

Welcome! I agree with the moose start with ranger bands and see if they work good enough for you. i love my stippled scales tho! I got these from bsmith here on the forum and they are great in hand and offer an amazing amount of grip wet or dry, plus they have my screen name on em :)

Welcome! The ranger band idea is an old favorite and works for a lot of people, however if you access to or happen to know anyone with a media blaster you could blast the scales (or talk to K9 Handler on here) I have on good account that they are quite awesome I'm having the scales on my BK-16 done next week or so.

@Moose: Good point, I'll probably try dropping by bicycle shop to see if they have any old inner tubing to try that first. Is inner tubing stretchy enough that it won't be too difficult to remove if needed?

@worldwood: That looks awesome and like it gives plenty of traction. Does it ever start biting into your hands a bit too much with prolonged use??

@TheWambo: Sadly I'm not too sure where there would be a local place for media blasting and local dealings is generally just easier for me. Thanks for the idea though, I'll definitely keep it in mind for the future.

I havent used this set yet, but this is my 2nd set from him. the first set was the same without the screen name and beckerhead number but they were a little ruff on the hands at first so i took a piece of sandpaper and very lightly took off the sharp edges and now they are so comfortable and get even better with use. but yes if you dont round them out a little it will get rough on the hands with prolonged use but it only took me seconds to fix that issue.

And inner tubes are very stretchy and easily removable, just try and grab a few different sized tubes to find what fits best.

PM me your address, I have some tubing here I can send you.

It is definitely stretchy enough. I have it on a couple of my knives and it makes a WORLD of difference.

Hey bro, any way you could send me some of those if you have extra? I wanna try some ranger band handles on my bk2 before I try anything else.

Another oldie but goodie idea, and cheap. 3M brand friction tape, 3/4" x 20' for $3 at Home Depot. Sticky as hell, at first, then merely grippy after a while, and easily removeable.

Is there a particular size you use? I have some old mountain bike tubes in my storage unit. Are they too big?

I'm not sure... It was the middle size tube that I got. The large tube was used on my zippo. the small size I cut up into thin slices and use instead of rubber bands around the house. The little one seemed to be in the 1/2" diameter, the middle was about 3/4" I'm thinking and large was about 1.5"... Hope this helps.
