Hello everyone. So I just received my first becker in the mail the other day. I got a BK9 and so far i'm really enjoying it. It came razor sharp out of the box (never had a knife that sharp before). I took it for a hike yesterday to try and find a piece of wood for the february challenge (it took too long for my knife to come... probably won't enter).

Anyways, ended up chopping some dead strawberry guava which is ridiculously hard. My edge went dull. So today I sharpened it with a smiths sharpening kit. The edge was all over the place between 22-30 degrees i think. The worst was at the tip. After some magic markings, some DVR'd tv shows and a lot of patience, I got it to a even 25 degrees. It rips hair (doesn't shave haha) but slices paper as easy as it did when it arrived. Plus its now easier to maintain (1095 takes a nice easy edge compared to my only other knife in D2... but I love my rat 3!)

So some pro's

-Lighter than I imagined
-Sharpens relatively easy
-cheap (I chose this over junglas cause I really wanted to use it without worrying!)

con's

-Hamajang edge
-sheath rattles like a poop head
-no bk13 included (I got it from a real respected store based off of recommendations from you guys, but they didn't package it even though their sales picture had it displayed with the 9!)

I'll make sure to put some use into it while I learn (no real outdoors in this metropolis)

Thanks for all the help with choosing this knife!

Argh, fine. Here's a pic from the hike.

Great place to hike! I don't my bk9 rattling all that much. Sucks that you didn't get the bk13, though those were faded out fairly recently. Can always pick one up next time you order something, comes with its own sheath too. The edge is very fine, which I really like, though is prone to damage. Luckily it does sharpen up pretty easily.

Congrats on the knife.

Wow, beautiful view. I love that BK9, mine sports a toothy, stropped edge that will take hairs, but has a very good draw cut.

If you want to kill that rattle, you can take that insert out (use a chopstick to seperate the glue), heat it with a hair dryer, and mold it to the blade for a better fit, put it back in the sheath, and reglue it.

Or buy you a kickass kydex sheath from one of the many kydex benders here on Bladeforums.:D

Glad to hear you worked out the edge sharpening problem, on larger knives, guides can be hard to do. I find a 9-10' bench stone made by Nortons to be a great way to keep it sharp.

Anyway, good post, good pics, that food is making me hungry. Of course it always does.

Why did you start with the smallest one in the line up? I think that a good first Becker is a Remora. :D J/K

I'm really itchin' for a 9 right now. I'm just jealous of ya that's all. :D

That pic of the food is a small lunch made out of the free samples from costco. I got the 9 because I already have a smaller knife which goes on every hike. Definately the next knife will be a folder. I think the salt 1 for EDC and diving.

now that you have pix, you can fix the title :)
