First Benchmade?

Well, I own one of almost every major brand knife EXCEPT BM. My budget is about $100. Whats a good first BM? I was leaning HEAVILY towards an Apparition, but due to the lack of availability online and mixed opinions I am second guessing myself. I am a sucker for assisted openers. I like the skirmish but its too big for EDC(not to mention pricey, but if it was in my range I'd buy it). I also like the folder Resistor but its also way expensive. I strayed from BM due to designs I considered "boring" and real plain looking knives..............what would be a good BM for this price as an EDC? Should I hold out till the app comes out? thanks

i recommend the 710 or the 806d2, but you'll have to really shop around to land one for under $100 including s/h. the 805 is also a fantastic choice. you can definitely bring one home for under $100 and it'll knock your socks off. 440c steel blade with TONS of belly, the always-cool (and sturdy) AXIS lock, and an excellent grip.

and for much less money, pick the Griptilian of your choice (spend a little more for a Ritter). just don't expect anything amazing out of the zytel handles.

kinda like the 805.....Something about them just throws me off as they are "plain" but I like them still.....is the resistor a good knife for 126. ............Also what makes the 710 expensive? the steel?

Pick up a 710 HS or 806D2 and you'll see why:) BTW the main reason for slightly higher prices on these models over the 805 IS the blade steel. 806D2 is in D2, standard 710 is in 154CM and 710 HS is in M2. Also, the 805 has been discontinued, so you need to get them while you still can.

I'll have to agree, the 710 HSSR is my first choice and second for the 806D2. The 710 is a great knife and is usually what's in my pocket when I'm not at work. The 806D2 is my daily work knife. The handle design is very secure feeling when your really working the knife. If you like a slightly smaller knife you might wait until the model 707 comes out. It's the replacement for the discontinued 705. Best of luck!

i would go for the griptilian. they go as low as 65-70 bucks. 440c is hard to beat for the buck in my opinion. Do any of you know where you can get the s30v grip? i have only heard of it once. if it is true let me know

If you can carry a large folder, by all means, get a BM 805!! I have a pair of 'em (plain-edge, and part serrated), and the 805 is MY favorite folder, period. I had 4 of 'em at one time.:D.

Another good Benchmade (alot smaller and less expensive) is the 556 Mini-Griptilian.

thanks again. thats a good deal in my opinion. i am really satisfied withthe s30v that i own now. i was telling a guy at work about the grip s30v i heard about and decided if we could find them for around 100 then we would get one and thanks to you i am a hundred bucks in the hole. thanks though :)

I love my 710HSSR, but if I was buying it again I'd go with the 710HS unless you love serrations. I've bought a lot of knives since, including other BM's, and I haven't found anything to replace my 710 as my EDC. The only thing I don't like about it is it's ugly. :) I'll be the first to admit that, but I love everything else about it.

The 806 is a great knife, but I find it's just to darn big (long) for my liking.

I'm partial to the 732BT myself. It's 154cm steel, which ain't bad, and unique. Feels good in the hand with a good blade profile. Can be grabbed online for $100 and it's what's in my pocket.

Personaly I would take a another look at the Skirmish. It is a little pricey, but it's a great knife. I got mine in my pocket right now. :D

All personal preferences aside:

As a first BM i would recommend the Griptilian 550. It is the original Gripi and has everything a very strong knife but lightweight knife needs on a low price.

There are other knives with pros and cons (i prefer the 520 and the 806), but the Gripi is an example of how BM makes knifes with a concept. Add the steel (BM is famous for their 440C) and the lock (patented Axis lock), you get a real Benchmade.

The original black and steel should be your choice but the olive black one is a nice looking knife too, as far as you don´t care about weared down coatings.

I agree on the Griptilian series.

My 551 has sent my Spyderco G-10 Police and my Benchmade 722 both back to the box.

Good luck,
Allen.

You might want to wait until mid March or the end of March and check out the new 635 which is a trimmed down Skirmish.
