I do not have any experience with Benchmade knives. I am looking at the Mel Pardue designed 550 HG and mini 550 HG. I will not be able to handle either before I make the purchase. I like the round hole and the Axis lock. The knife will serve as a general utility blade. To those who have Benchmades, what has been your experience? How do they compare to Blade-Tech and Spyderco? ( I have been very happy with both brands) Are there any other Benchmades that I should look at? Thank you, Frank

It depends on how much you are looking to spend and what size knife you want. The griptilian is a great knife and almost everyone likes them. The small one seems more sturdy than the large but that is just perception because the large has a hollow sound/ feel to it. But they are both equally strong.

My favorite is the 950 Rift. Awesome knife and is basically THE knife for me. It's always in my pocket and I will rotate other knives IWB to accompany it.

Go for the Mini-grip, model # 555HG. To me it has a better feel and way easier to EDC. Honestly, just buy you won't be sorry. If by any chance you don't like it you can always trade or sell it.

My next knife purchase will be a 550HG with the trainer. Now if my Gunting would sell so I have some money.

I love my 2 benchmades, a 556 and 710. I was satisfied with my spydercos and kershaws before getting them, but now, the axis is my absolute favorite locking mechanism. The action is much smoother in both opening and closing than spyderco lockbacks and kershaw ao's.

It was just announced that the Benchmade Nagara won the Blade Magazine 2009 Imported Knife Of The Year®. If you want a really refined, Ti slabbed Gentleman's folder at a ridiculously low price think about it when considering your second Benchmade purchase.
Happy Hunting!

The one thing that turned me off to the Nagara is the the thumb studs can snag and "wave" on the interior seam of a pocket if you pull it out certain ways. The concave side surface is what catches. If it weren't for that I'd have one right now.

Between the full and mini Grips I'd say go for the mini if it's your first Benchmade. The size is more pocketable and the liners are full length as opposed to partial like on the full size. Partial liners aren't a problem or anything (no problems after 4 years with my partial-liner axis locks) but if you want maximum confidence go with the mini. :)

The ruckus is beefy as hell, and heavy, but mind-blowingly tough and amazing. :D I highly recommend it if you can get your hands on one. Full-length double-thick steel frame with an axis lock and a g10/micarta handle.
