Finally came in the mail. After a lot of soul searching, I bought...

The Axis assisted Warn Tanto in D2

Oh, and the nifty little blue tool dude

It's my first assisted blade, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I've owned a couple of automatics (they were called switchblades then), but this was a solid, positive and reassuring snap to the open position.

Muy sharp out of the box. It would grab the hair on my arm and take little slivers off but not shave off the whole thing like a razor, so no bald spot. Not sure what to call that. The edge grind wasn't very even on both sides, but I figure it's a factory knife, so I guess that's expected. Flipped it open a few times, wiped the fingerprints off and put it where it goes when not doing its job:

The pocket made especially for knives.

Now I need to use it a bunch so I can sharpen it with all the cool DMT stuff I bought. I'm guessing the little sharpener on the blue tool is for emergency use only.

Unfortunately. most Benchmade knives are not sharp out of the box. They have a very obtuse edge angle and it often requires reprofiling. Nice knife though.

Great Score I love my Benchmade Mini Grip with Wilkens GRIP scales I added. Awesome! I wrote a letter to Benchmade about the sharpness issue and they are taking it seriously and wrote me a letter back and ramping up quality control now. So only time will tell...If you have a Benchmade that you are not satisfied with you can send it back to them for resharpening for free with just like 10 bucks for shipping and send them a letter!!

Congrats on a nice first Benchmade. Yes, the sharpener on the multitool is for quick and dirty touchups in the field but it's not recommended for anything else.

Again, Benchmade does their edges by hand, and so the angle of each side can, and is often different as a result.

That D2 blade is a good one. I always run the knife for a while as is and then sharpen it as I see fit...and on the LifeSharp service, which is a deal, for shipping on your part to them and a $5 return fee often gets you a better edge than what leaves the plant initially in the box.

Enjoy that 583 WARN, it's a good one!

I got my first Benchmade the other day. Nice knife, I really like it, but I had to put it to my paper wheels before I could get it to pop hairs. I would think for the money they would come from the factory like that. I've never had to do that with my Kershaws or Spydercos.

Is that G-10? If it is it's sweet!

...BTW I've had plenty of B'mades and almost all were super sharp.

Yup, it is definitely a 'quirk' of Benchmade knives. I just finished having to re-profile two 710-1 M390 blades on conventional stones - not amused. Once you get a proper edge on them, Benchmades are 'kick-ass' knives. It is just the getting there part...

The WARN knife pictured uses textured G-10 for the scales...and BTW is the same mechanically as the 580 Barrage model. The scales can be changed for the standard 580 and the reverse also, not that you'd want to do that.

One very nice feature on this knife is there's a flat spot under the clip, so it's easy to put in and pull out of, the pocket.

Thre are too many reports of out of box dull edges on Benchmades...yeah LifeSharp fixes that but they need to address this problem...which is very common to read about on the various Forums.
