Finally a little free time! Had a couple of hours this morning before the work began so I took my dog and my BK2 for a trudge through the snow of upstate NY. Gotta say, very impressed with the performance, especially for the size. I like compact tools. Cleaned off limbs like nothing and chopped down small trees like a hatchet. Can't wait to do more with this thing, but even after 20 minutes of use I'm sold on this knife. Now I've got to use it tonight to prepare dinner...

Thanks for the welcome Ethan! Between the campanion and my bk11, I have nothing but good things to say about your designs. Looking forward to expanding the collection once funds are in order. Thanks for all the years of dedication that you have put into your blades and your customers!

I love the 2 heavy duty knife it just feels like you have power when you pick it up.

Chopped like a hatchet? That's a stretch unless you have some ancient technique lost to man, you have no experience with hatchets, or your hatchets completely suck. The 2 is an awesome knife but chopping like a hatchet isn't one of its strong points.

Sorry, I tried not to post but what I think are my better sensibilities got the best of me.

Gah...wake up on the wrong side of the boat?

The guy got a new BK2 for the first time and the first time out with it. I remember that feeling. Never having really whacked at a sapling with just a knife. The BK2 takes it down quick. He even specified a small tree. Didn't say axe... hatchet.

The excitement of playing with a 2 for the first time is a great feeling. So what, maybe a bit of embellishment but we all get it...most of us I guess.

Lighten up man...

Yeah, me too...I guess I'll borrow your disclaimer and use it here also...

This seems like it fits here.

When I first got my bk9, and war sword, I did a comparison review. In that review I also the in the bk2 and a hatchet ( for the chopping comparison)... And the bk2 did beat the hatchet... The thread is still there, but the photos broke when imageshack deleted my account (they went from a free service to a paid one, and I'm not willing to pay them). Maybe ill re-upload them sometime.

I believe it was kind of a "perfect storm" situation for it, but it did happen. The hatchet was a no-name Chinese 1.24lb lowes special, that I'd sharpened up until it could cut paper. The edge was still crazy thick though. Also, my skill level with hatchets is not high. I struggled with accuracy with the hatchet. So while the bk2 didn't remove as much per swing, I was more accurate.

It's worth noting that I used a lanyard (moose style), and a 2 or 3 finger grip, which effectively lengthens the overall length.

Anyway, I'm agreeing that the bk2 is not an ideal chopper, but I can see how it is both impressive, and exciting, particularly if the other tools you've used before it weren't great.

Oh, and congrats on the new steel :).

Gettin' that Bad Boy our for some cold crisp air - luv it!

Thanks for sharing.

Axl,

Glad you like it. I have the same feeling about my 2. Very confidence inspiring. As my Becker collection grew, the 2 fell out of love for awhile. (But not by much). The 16 was the 1st bk2 "home wrecker" that turned my head. Oh, the perfection of the nimbleness and utility of the 16. Then a 14's arrival from Olean disrupted my gaze at the 2 more; that little blade was a constant EDC companion (until it's shinier d2 variant arrived next.). The story goes on and on as discontinueditis raged and 15s,5's&4's arrived. And then the space/time continuum altered when the King came a knocking. (You can't not have a 9 suddenly made sense.) On and on this went and the 2 grew dust. Lonely. I won't mention Kukri madness, (now that thing is a hatchet in disguise, lots of time required to figure out that blades secrets awaits). The 2 waited.

But then a chance at a late season hunt arrived and I brought the 2 along. I didn't get a deer but the 2 got some woods time, ,mostly doing firewood prep. I convexed the 2 and a very different experience occurred. I could now make short work of feathersticks (I'm not skilled at them but made some functional ones) and it batoned lots of kindling and camp kitchen prep.

After awhile a whole new awakening of that design's genius emerged. The 2 is a compromise of many things but it is a finely honed compromise that can do way more than I appreciated once some time is spent convexing the edge, once I was able to generate a large convex radius, that blades performance really jumped. I always thought that the .25" thick design made it too clunky for any serious slicing, boy was I wrong! And try to pick any other knife if you had to do some really rough work with it, lawn mowers have lost their life to this thing. Confidence.

Here's a pic with some new pants it now enjoys, love that knife now that I'm starting to understand its design intent more. Thanks for sharing.

Ok...thanks for the warm welcome...

Alright, I said the the knife hacked down the trees LIKE a hatchet...not AS GOOD AS a hatchet. There is a difference. I used hatchets and axed for wood processing before i ever picked up a knife. It may have been a couple of swings off of what a hatchet would have done. Choke back with a two finger grip and it really moves some material. And for a five inch knife, that's pretty dang impressive. And especially for the compact size, which is important to me, and ease of carry. It gets the job done. And for a one tool option its pretty great. I always carry two or more blades and I like to be confident in each ones abilities. There are always going to be better tools for the job. But as compromises go, its not too bad.

Axel, I am sorry.

Most of the time, I just think things and don't say them. As I get older, more of exactly what I am thinking comes out of my mouth. I wouldn't change that for anything although my approach needs some work. Instead of what I said, I should have said...

"Chopping like a hatchet is a stretch but glad you love the knife and welcome to the forums! This is a great place to share your knife adventures. It's filled with good people that love the Becker line, are very knowledgeable with knives, and it's just plain old fun. Be warned: I can be a prick sometimes but I'm working on it."

Best,

I'm sorry my first post was a buzzkill. In my opinion, this forum is awesome, the Becker knives are awesome, and the people on it are awesome. You might have to endure the occasional argument or crappy comment (from yours truly) but I really just value honesty and an honest opinion. See? NCSlice called me out for waking up on the wrong side of the boat. He's right. I was a prick and I'm sorry. Like I said, my approach needs work. I'm really not trying to be a troll. Everyone has things they need to work on. One of mine is not blurting out the first thing that comes to mind. :foot: I'm sure everyone here knows that they can call me on anything that sounds like crap or anything that resembles me waking on the wrong side of the bed.

So welcome to the forums here, Axel! :) I love the BK2. Awesome knife for a bug out bag. I actually used my wife's as a pry bar at about 11 pm last night to help free a friends cat that got stuck under the fiberglass dock here. Apparently, it chops 1/2" thick fiberglass almost as good as it cuts wood. The ordeal will be in a video I release relatively soon.

Thanks for the input. No hard feelings. I've been lurking around the forum for a month gathering knowledge, that's what made me get the bk2. This place is very enlightening and welcoming and makes me want to do more and spend more time out enjoying my surroundings, which is a rare thing to find on the Internet.

Ahh, you've been lurking. So you ALREADY know I can be a prick. ;)

Haha not so much of that, I just know that this forum is filled with people that have a vast understanding of everything and if one person doesn't know the answer another certainly will

Haha! Very true. This is very much a resource for knife knowledge and hey, you can't go wrong with a Ethan design so all of the people on this BK&T forum have the experience with these very well designed knives. It's a great forum.

And, like the rest of the family, they are reliable as an iron skillet. Just clean it up a bit when done, a little mineral oil on the shiny parts and sharpen when needed.
