hello all, im a knew (tryingtomake)Knifemaker, got a question on hand sanding, yeah coz i havent a belt grinder :D
well i grinded my blade n started to hand sand it with 80grit paper, but there r many deep scrarches left fromo grinding, my question is should i remove them all with 80 grit n then start with 100, 120 or any higher after, or should i left the few scratches n go higher now...
thx for your answer :D

stay with the 80 till they are all worked out then go to 120 then 220. the best way to see the new scratches from the old is to sand each new grit in a different direction than the last.

so i much sand wich each size of great n remove any scratch appearing with the great before jumping to a higher one? right?
gonna use a lot of sheet..... :D

To save on paper use a wet/dry paper with a little liquid soap and water and sand in a X pattern kinda like cross hatching, the soap will help keep the paper from clogging and wearing out as fast and the cross hatching cuts faster and shows up deep scratches that need to be removed. I have used this method for many years pollishing out Harley cases and other metals.

Also, they make those rubber sticks for cleaning belt sander belts that will also take the gunk and debris off of any sandpaper. Just drag the stick across the sandpaper until it's clean and you're good to go some more.

In the event that you get sick of all of that sanding, remember that you can make nice knives on an inexpensive grinder. My grinder was only $110 new, and you'll make that money back in all the sand paper, files, and emergency room bills for all the bullets they have to remove from your foot.
Any pictures yet?
