Like so many other collectors, I rotate the use of my favorite folders so I can enjoy the unique qualities of all of them.

I hadn't used the CRKT Carson Small Spearpoint Carbon Fiber for a while, so I clipped in neatly into my pocket.

A few hours later when I needed a quarter out of the pocket..realized I was in trouble.

Hand went in fine, but coming out, I feel it hit something sharp..and the something sharp started going in very deep.

Somehow, my hand coming out of the pocket had opened the spearpoint blade, and the tip was cutting into the hand very deeply.

After dressing the wound, about 2 inchs long, and maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch at its' deepest, and after stopping all the blood, I examined the knife.

The detent was so loose it allowed the blade to easily pivot, and the rear shoulder of the carbon-fiber scale surrounding the blade point was so low..it offered absolutly minimal protection..and none at all when the blade started pivoting open micro-millimeters.

I believe this product as it lay in my pocket was an accident waiting to happen.

Colombia River K&T..I think you have a problem!

Kicker to the story: I was at the local range shooting my AR-15...the rangemaster scolded me thats' what I get for playing with sharp objects!

It's my first blood, and made me pay a lot more attention to my pocket carry knives.

Needless to say...the little CRKT won't be going out much anymore if at all.

That's why I carry my "serious" knives, especially those with pocket clips in my right back pocket. Front pockets are for money clip knives, Case knives, Buck "tri-folds", etc.

It's hard to find good linerlocks with a strong ball detent. Some of the best knives out there I will not carry often because the ball detent is so weak. My SOCOM-Elite and an Emerson CQC-7 I had briefly suffered from this problem. Great knives (I love my new SOCOM-Elite), but the ball detent ain't so safe. SOCOM-E comes with a belt pouch, so it still will be carried, but probably not just clipped in my pocket.

I love the Axis Locks from Benchmade, because the Axis lock keeps the blade in better than any linerlock I've seen. Smooth as my Microtech's too! My Gerber Walker's linerlock has a strong ball detent too. If I had an Axis Lock MT SOCOM-Elite, that would be the perfect folder for me. :)

I own/have owned many of CRKT's models and only had
this specific problem w/one. My Navajo would open
very easily, i got bit once or twice. I carry a medium
S-2 with my custom wood inlay, Great lockup, very sweet.
I have no experiance with the model you mentioned nor do
I carry in the same manner. But I would give CRKT a ring.
They have always been very good to me. They will more than
likely ask you to send it back. But a knife you don't
feel comfortable carring isn't really a knife at all.
It would be worth a Email anyway.
Just my 2 cents.

I have also posted on Knifeforums, and e-mailed the CRKT folks my experiance.

Short of a non-disclosure requirement..I'll let you know 1: If they even respond, 2: What they have to say,3: How they propose any customer satisfaction.

I always enjoy seeing how a business responds to its' customers.

To be far to them, I have a full-sized CRKT M-16 spearpoint thats' my favorite. For a while at least untill I take out another oldie I haven't used for a while!

Even though my EDC knives (Emerson Commander and CQC-7b) are immune to this problem due to their tip-up carry, I never carry anything else in the pockets with the knives, just because of things like this. Having a load of change or anything else is there is just not a good idea.

Carrying other objects in the knife pocket can damage the knife, slow it's draw if you need it quickly, or wedge in the gap between liner and blade causing other problems.

I wonder if you had been accidentally shot, whether your Rangemaster would have said "That's what you get for playing with guns?"
Some people's kids...
