I got my first Boker yesterday - a Subcom with green handle and black blade combo-edge. I have heard a lot of great things about the Subcom but this is the first one I have handled myself. I see now why there are so many fans out there - this is a very nice knife, especially for the low price. The handle is a great design and offers exceptional grip for such a small knife. The quality is excellent and the knife feels very solid.

I intend to use this knife pretty hard, so I broke it in by trimming some green branches on a bush near my parking space. It worked very well, and I appreciated the serrations for this task. I also used the knife to open some packages and cut some cardboard - it was very nice cutting through the cardboard. However, I think the Wharcom would be an even better choice for opening packages or letters - maybe I'll have to get that one too!

Afterward I used a DMT coarse stone to make sure I had a 30 degree back bevel on the PE and then sharpened on the Sharpmaker. I also used the Spdyerco 701 Profile set to touch up the serrations. I was very pleased with how easy the knife was to sharpen.

All in all, I really like the Subcom a lot. I have been using smaller knives more often lately, and I am really impressed by the cutting power of this small Subcom - that handle is a great design that allows a lot of grip.

Now I am thinking about getting a Trance...

Aloha nphelps4130,

WOW! What a great mini-review! Nice meeting you BTW, and do keep us posted on how the coat stands up to usage. You are correct regarding the WF being better on boxes and such, also resharpening this one you could do with your eyes closed. (But ya didn't hear that from me okay?:p )

Mahalo much for taking the time to thread about your Subcom experience, and God bless:thumbup:

Congrats on your new fine Biscuit. Indeed, the Wharcom seems better for opening boxes, but did you see the new Subclaw?
Anyway, I think you'll love the Trance :)

Ehh? Subclaw? Either you're referring to a Rescom, or there's a hawkbill version I haven't heard of...

Thanks for the reply Daywalker - nice to meet you also and thanks for a great design. This Subcom was my first CLB knife, but I'm sure not the last! I find wharncliffe blades very useful in my EDC, so a wharcom may be in order before too long. Obviously it is too early to draw conclusions, but the coat on this blade stood up very well to cardboard and shrubbery so far. I will post updates.

dialex, I assume the Subclaw to be the Rescom? A very cool knife - I am starting to think the Subcom design is both a blessing and a curse b/c there are so many nice varieties and after you get just 1, you will want them all!:D Already I am interested in the Trance and Wharcom, and I am eyeing the Subcom fixed blade as well. The good part is that we have access to such nice knives at very affordable prices so we won't go broke collecting them all:thumbup: . Hmm, this thread has got me in the mood to carry my Adventura along with my new Subcom today.;)

The SubClaw is a brand new CLB/Boker Plus design, and is totally different from the Rescom. It is a Hawkbill blade.
We expect to receive delivery of it in Sept.
Thanks, TJT

oops - I stand corrected! I went to the Boker site and saw the Subclaw - definitely a must-have for me. This Subcom series is getting better and better! I don't have any compact hawkbills so this Subclaw will be a welcom addition.

The SublClaw and Drop Point Trance look like must haves. We still need a wharncliffe Trance though! :D

Oh, Lord! When will the madenss end?:D I thought I just needed a Wharcom to complete my biscuit collection, but now there's the Subclaw, too? Have mercy on my wallet, Daywalker! For the love of...

Okay, actually, keep it up. We still need a Sheepcom, a Tantocom, and a few others.;)

Oh, no...there's a red Rescom and a drop point Trance out, too...

Oh no... As G. Scott H. just said, when will it end!

I can see every single type of blade there is in a Subcom...

And I still need to find a local dealer...:(

First of all, you really shouldn't allow me to have a knife like that Subclaw.
No telling how much damage I could do with it!

And I have to wait ... how long? :(

Trance Drop Point. Get me one, fast and I'll wait for the Subclaw. :)
(The Trance is really fine as is, but I like the variant!)

Edit to add: for those who haven't found them ... CHAD LOS BANOS Subcom & Trance

Mahalo much ALL!

Cripes, why am I always the LAST to find out about these things?

Red Rescom? SubClaw? Drop Point Trance?

Okay, I knew about the Drop Point Trance, but the other two I thought were still "uncertain". I am as shocked as the rest of you all, and thanks for the links Esav my brother!!!

God bless:cool:

Very welcome!

The Trance is a beautiful knife with its original blade.
The drop point may be a more familiar, popular shape, though.

I know I didn't like the looks of the original tip much,
until I got mine and found out how effective it is for detail work.

The Subclaw is too good to believe.
Yes, I like hawkbills. :D

Hmmm, now that there's a red Rescom, I guess there needs to be another color scheme for the Subcom Trainer. Blue or orange, maybe?

A wharncliffe trance would be a nice addition! The Subcom and Trance designs are a great platform for variations in blade shape. Thanks to Boker for releasing these fine knives in so many different forms.

congrats on the Subcom nphelps4130!
here's mine, along with some friends....

Mahalo jaislandboy,

GREAT pics! Um, what is that stainless steel handled knife BTW? :D

Just kidding...kinda odd in that those two designs came from the same "mind", eh? :D

God bless and take care Knifebro:cool:

thanx Daywalker.....
....maybe the broad flat ground Leaf shaped blade gives away the "secret" of their designer.... ;) All Brilliant designs IMO.....keep up the excellent work Chad! :)
