Just recieved my first buck knife today. I have been edc a sheffield 110 Copy in a leather berger case from the eighties and decided to get a real buck. I went for a 112 standard with 420hc
The blade had some surface rust and the brass was dull. The edge was very sharp. I polished it up and cleaned up the blade. I stropped the knife a few times to clean up the rust off the cutting edge. I also rubbed the sheath with a little mink oil. I absolutely love the 112.
Do any of you 112 guys ever get in a situation where you wished you had a 110 on you? Do i need to buy a 110 and compare?

P. S. The weight is fine on the belt or un the pocket so i can't agree with all the reviews that traditional lockbacks are too heavy for edc

knife, Welcome to the Buck Forum. I'm like you and have never thought the 112 or 110 were heavy. I appreciate the feel of a solid knife. The brass being tarnished is normal as it could have been on the shelf a while. I'm surprised at the blade showing rust. But you never know who's been handling it. You being able to strop puts you way ahead toward maintaining a sharp knife. DM

I have one 112 and three...no, four 110's. I carry the 112 the most. What does that tell you?

For what its worth, I prefer the 112. However I do have a few 110's.
I think you should try a 110 if you get the opportunity .
Theres got to be a reason it is such a popular ( iconic?) knife.

The top bolster has a slight hook back that acts as a guard. The 110 does not seem to have it. I will be getting a 110 im sure as for some reason it is cheaper than the 112. I really do not need a 4 inch blade thlugh as many of my fixed blades fill the 110 role.

You're going to like your Buck, especially when it comes to maintaining that blade. The 420hc seems to hold and edge alright, but it just doesn't take much to get it back to razor sharp when it does get dull. Very rewarding. The 110 is worth getting as it's probably the best knife value around. I have that and a 720 Spitfire. The 720 has the same steel and I really like it for that reason.

I'm a fan of the 112, and actually it's my favorite knife. I like the 110 as well, but I don't think there has ever been a time that I regretted not having it on me. I don't find myself using it that much besides camping, but even then it's usually in my bag and the 112 is on my belt. The price is right so pick up a 110 when you can. Even if you like the 112 better and use it more often, you won't regret having the 110 in the stable.

Congrats on getting the Buck.
I've never tried a 112. Back when I was young (a long time ago) the 110 was my "Grail" knife. I finally bought my first one this year ... and a 301, 371, and 389 ...
The 110 and 301, along with a scout knife are my daily EDC trio.

Congrats! And welcome to the club! I was forced into Buck as a youngster. My father has carried Buck exclusively since the 60's. He still carries a 119 from the 70's on every hunting trip. Sometime in the late 80's I was pounding it through bone, with a framing hammer, and I chipped the blade out down low. He polished it back up and calls them his custom serrations lol. Actually makes getting through tendons easier. I now own many Buck models, and my 110 AG S30V is my crown jewel. My Vangaurd gets the most use in the field and has processed tons of deer and Elk. I say grab a Buck, any model, whenever you see a good price. I bet you'll be happy with them all!

Another new Buck fan here, and, like you, I'm starting to work up a list of knives I'd like to keep my not-yet-received CS 501 company:

500 Duke
701 Mustang
532 Bucklock

I may hold out for them to add the 500 to the Custom Shop, because I'd like to get it with Walnut scales and an S30V blade to match my 501.

As for the Bucklock, they're few and far between. It may be some time before I find the perfect one to become my special occasion knife.
