Well now i got your attention, this is the first busse i've used, and owned for that matter. It warmed to -4 F today so i decided to take the boy out and try out my new SJTac.

First we needed to pick a spot for our snow shelter

pretty cool shelter! any pics of what happened between 2 and 3?

and where is the door?

Good job. I sure am glad it was like 80 degrees here today. -4 degrees doesnt sound to good. Stay warm.

It did well, some of the cuts would of been nice to have a saw but i just used a batton stick and went to town. Got some good flex tring to seperate a few logs...Reprofiled the edge yesterday, couldn't work out the mousepad and sandpaper so i went with what i know. INFI is some tuff stuff :D

here is the SJTac with the snow plug

Out!

Holly cow you guys are quick!!! I was getting the other pics ready and already replies

Sorry no pics between got busy working and forgot...Used a tarp to cover and pilled on the snow, makes a great insulator.

-4 is pretty warm, it was -30ish this morning and we've seen -49 this winter  . We're going to go back and camp out next weekend, being a school night and all ;)

door is the off color snow plug in the middle of the shelter. Fill something with snow form it and let it freeze in place so it forms...then you can pull it out get in and put it back once you're inside. I've slept in one of these at -25 and stayed warm with just a sleeping bag, no candle or heater

I think I sorta recognize that knife.

And my shelter would look like a pile of dung afterwards. Nice job.

UP to -4? EEEEK!

I'd have to think that you are useing the term warm in a relative manner.

I've been outside on a warm day that didn't get over about one ten. This morning it was a chilly 46 outside, it's all relative.

That's some really nice information to have, if I am ever stranded outside with negative temps I know I will try like heck to build my own snow shelter, I just won't be able to tell my friends afterwards that it was warm inside, if I survive at all.

Thanks for the post and pics, you guys have fun this weekend, I'll set my thermostat down below 60 in your honor.

Is that blade gray or double cut? I didn't think DC was an option on the SJTAC:confused:

Grey / Black combo, wrapped with 550 outer.

I'd have to think that you are useing the term warm in a relative manner.

If properly constructed and insulated a shelter like that will stay above 0F even if -50 outside. Need to start by getting down to the soil, make shelter as small as possible to retain heat, and use at least 6"-8" of snow for insulation.

Nice shelter, but I'm still confused on the door. That light blue snow plug is not big enough to crawl through.

Just under the blue is the plug. It was partially covered from me throwing snow on the front. Pull the off white block of snow out and slide on it. Under the plug is a few logs that run across the front braces. If need be take the top log out, you would remove some insulation but you can stick something around to stop the block.

I’ll take some pics this weekend, my son and I are planning on sleeping in it provided it’s above -20 or so.

Nice shelter. I have a Mole Jack since yesterday ( thanks JohnnyO ) and I'm
looking for a sheath. Is yours the long model Spec-Ops ? How do you like it ?

Dirk

It's the small Spec-Ops, fits nice and i do like it. I would get the survival model rather than standard.

Well we camped out last night (-10F) here are the pics i promised
