Okay I have an abundance of high quality blades under 6" (BRKTs and Fallknivens). I'm looking for my first quality biggun. Something in the 8-9" mark, good for chopping and batoning.

I'm having trouble however deciding and keep around in circles (you know how it is when you start reading forums posts you can go in all sorts of tangents).

I'm interested in the:

Chopweiler
With a blade length of 7.5" it's a little short compared to the rest but the handle shape should allow at least another inch in leverage. Overall design looks fantastic and since it is still only 7.5 it should be lighter... in theory (having trouble finding weights for these knives). Cons - hard to find! Seems everyone wants to hang onto these ones which says a lot too I guess.

M9
At 9.5" it looks like a real chopper. Looks great although I'd love to see it with the same handle as the chopweiler. Seems slightly easier to get a hold of on the forums.

Dogfather
Looks great but more basic. I'm sure it will get the job done but it doesn't have the same sort of 'special' the swamp rats have. Cheaper though which is always welcome.

and the dark horse...

Fehrman Final Judgement
Very different looks, a touch more expensive but still excellent quality. Real advantage here is that I can buy from the maker and get the options I want without having to wait for someone to sell his. And I know it is brand new. Cons - not sure I'm enamored with the handle shape.

I'd consider the First Strike too if someone has direct experience.

Sorry, Busse doesn't make any knives of the type you describe. Perhaps you should take a look at Mtech?

:D

What ever knife you choose, get the g10 handle.
The canvas micarta would keep the fishy smell:thumbdn:

Save a bit more and get a NMSFNO .... then fully convex it .... a great knife for the money .... and it is Infi ....

Either of these two (that you mentioned) will serve you well!

I have a BWMLE on order, and I am Damn excited about that!..

If you want a Busse get one. NMSFNO can be bought for 320-400.

The dogfather cannot be beat for the price point and the amount of work it can do. However you are almost up into BWM length and you might as well do yourself a favor and order a brand new one direct.

I have no experience with the bigger swamp knives.

If you are planning on any long-term chopping I would recommend the Dog Father. The Resiprene C handle really helps absorb the shock transmitted to your hand from prolonged chopping.

I find myself using my Basic 9 and 11 much more than any others when I've got a lot of chopping to do.

So far we have two votes chopweiler, two votes m9 and two votes dogfather.

Any tie breakers?

I have a Dog Father and it is a chopping beast!!!!
The Res C is awesome IMO!!!!
Really don't think you can wrong with it.

Having never used a Basic 11 I'll put my vote in for the Dog Father. It is quite comfy, and chops like the beast it is. Plus, being cheaper that's a bonus. You're getting all the knife, that is Busse without any real noticeable difference in quality. Some will disagree, but seriously I've never had an issue with my DF.

If your dead set on one of the three mentioned, I'd vote DF. Given that you have lots of smaller knives, I'd say your looking primarily for a chopper. I've owned the DF & M9 and have used both. The DF is a beast, a little heavy & thick & I wasn't a fan of the square choil. The M9 feels & performs more like a machete or fighter, it's balance is fairly neutral. The Chopweiler feels great in hand, but I dont' think it won't chop with the DF, might be close to the M9. I'll let owners & users provide more feedback on this one.

With all this being said, if your willing to spend the money, I'd step up and buy the B11. It's INFI, it's a little longer and a little lighter (I think) than the DF and IMHO balances a little better. My only beef with the B11, is that I'd have liked to seen a larger/longer handle (ala the Battle Rat or DF). If you prefer a big/thick/wide bladed chopper I'd vote for the DF. Regardless ResC is by far the best choice for a chopper that your going to use a bunch.

The dog father is closer to steel heart size, where the b11 is closer to battle mistress.

Since I'm one to go big if I have a choice, if I had to choose from non busse kin I'd go with the rat daddy before going with an m9.

from what I've been reading, if your going to leave the edge stock the m9le is probably your best bet. it will be the thinnest all around user of the bunch.

If you want a very good 8" versatile all-rounder, then the bargain of the Busse line is the NMSFNO. Watch the Exchange for a good price on a user.
