Friction fire has been on my list for a little over a year...i got the firesteel down and the flint and steel down. But havent had time to ever go out and woodsbum (just had twins!).
So i been living vicariously through this forum...i read somewhere about using muellin and up on the mountain theres a boatload, so ive been slowly gathering stock. i also grabbed some yucca but i believe its too old since the inside is quite spongy...maybe ill grab a half dead stalk and dry it out (they only grow on the other side of the island). anyways, i tried bowdrill before and failed so i wanted to try hand drill muellin on muellin....only trouble is the hearth would be way too thin....and i remebered seeing rick use the two sticks tied hearth. so i said WTH try it out.
the first try i got it burned in and went for the coal but think i put too much downward pressure and not enough speed, just about went through the hearth.
attempt two i tried to quicken the pace once the dust started forming...by now im breaking a bead at 10pm.....body was glistening....i see smoke so i speed up and i look....BAM! got me a coal!!!!!! in my excitement i hurled it out but im on cloud 9 now. after doing this hand drill maybe ill look for a bow ,no blisters but some irritation on the upper palm.
knife i used was the mora 760(Triflex) i believe....with gaurd grinded off. no pics of the wee coal as it was spur of the moment... but heres what i was working with.....
i also wanted to say thanks for everyone who contributes to this forum! i rarely post but i read it daily.
