Plain and simple most suggested (bigger) cold steel folding knife. Been looking at voyager and talwar prefer the wave disk for opening preferably around the $50 range but any suggestions on my first.:D

For general utility use and just under the $50 price point, you can get a 4-inch Voyager Clip-Point.

The 4-inch Talwar will be about $20 or so more.

For a model with the wave opener about $50 how about the Rajah III?

As a sturdy large first Cold Steel, the Pocket Bushman is also a good deal.

The Voyager series offers a lot of knife for the money; however, if you're set on a thumb plate, then you might want to check out the Rajah III.

I'll also say the Rajah III might not be a bad choice. It's not as big as a larger Voyager, but it doesn't exactly look tiny either, and it also has the thumb plate. Check out these pics: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/753811-Cold-Steel-Rajah-III-Impressions

edit: *sigh* Dammit! Thanks a lot, Mr FRINGE! I went to ebay to check current prices on the Rajah III and ended up not only buying one but also a Recon 1 clip point and a Hold Out III! :grumpy::D Please don't ask for any more advice. I can't afford it! :p;)

Yes, they're clearing out the bead blasted models in preparation for the stonewashed version, so there are some good deals to be had.

Go for the plain edge version rather than the serrated model. No disrespect to Cold Steel, but their serrations seem to mainly work for hacking their way through flesh, while the plain edge is better for anything else.

I'd suggest a Large Voyager Clip Blade as well with the stone washed finish. Cuts well, plenty of size for all tasks, and the finish really cleans up nicely. And if you need one, give me a holler, I've got a couple I'm willing to let go of.

I was thinking about the large or the medium Voyager too as my first Cold Steel folder but I couldn't find one at a good price so I pulled the trigger and got this beauty:

I went with the regular sized one. Even though the XL is legal to carry in Texas it would probably be a little too big for my taste. Due to its width I think I would have had trouble getting my wallet in and out of my pocket because I carry them both in my front right pocket.

How tight is your lock? I don't have wimpy thumbs but the lock on mine is TIGHT! Hope it gets better after break in.

Yes, the XL is a bit oversized for edc but I think sooner or later it'll end up in my collection. :)

The lock on mine isn't thight but it needs more pressure to unlock than an ordinary lock back.

I own a 4" Ti-Lite, AK-47, and 1st gen Recon 1. For the money, I don't think it gets any better than the Ti-Lite. Just my two cents.

I got doubly lucky. I ordered a pair of Rajah 3's, one plain edge and one serrated...when I opened the box, my plain edged one WAS the stonewashed version. Unexpected, but very nice, especially for $30.

The Rajah 3 has been discontinued, along with the Hold Out III, the 4-inch Clip-Point Recon 1 and several other part-serrated or serrated models recently.

How recently? The most current Cold Steel Dealer's Catalog still lists the Rajah 3, both plain and serrated, the Hold Out 3 plain and serrated, etc. They're also not listed in the dealer's discontinued section.
