First completed knife. 1084 heat treated by Tru-Grit. Ironwood scales with orange liners, ss pins and thong hole. The blade looks a little junky in this pic as it was right after I removed the tape and I haven’t buffed/polished it yet. Critique welcome.

Good looking knife, good looking sheath.
Constructive critisism:
The shape of your handle makes that there is quite a distance between the index finger and edge. I prefer it when that distance is smaller

Looks good! Definitely something to be proud of. My criticism is that you made me feel bad because my first knife and sheath were not as nice.

Maybe next sheath, add a couple rivets at the ends of the stitching. And like the above poster said, it is nice to have the edge come closer to the index.

Very cool.

Excellent job!

Comments for the next one -
That little point on the scales where they meet the bottom of the ricasso is a very weak place. It is likely to snap off. On the next one either round it back or make a small angle back.
Like the others commented, the scales could have come a bit farther forward. The ricasso would have been better if about half as wide.

Hey man. Nice work. It's your first knife and sheath? :o
If so well done. YOou definitely did your homework before attempting it.
The bevels and plunge line looks nice for a first knife...almost semi-swept even. )) You use a file jig or a belt grinder?

Nice stitching on the sheath too and well formed. Far better than my first sheath haha.

Ps: i just joined and this is my first comment in my first forum...
Any advice on how I can post pics and stuff like this?

I use an Esteem grinder and have a bin full of stuff that loosely resemble knives. Lots of practice. I’m lucky as a nurse I only have a 3 day work week. I’d like to get good enough to sell a few, kinda like retirement or a part time job. Once I sell a few I wanna second grinder. I am lucky enough to have a wife that doesn’t mind my expensive hobbies (flyfishing) and have decent knife making tools. I use imgur to post pics.

Oh so first completed knife but not first attempt?
Makes more sense really. Thought it was abit clean for a first try. Especially with a belt grinder. I couldn't coubt how many I ruined learning freehand when I first got a grinder. :))
Before that it was files, which sucked but much harder to wreck a knife with files haha.

Anyway you're doing well and it looks like you're getting the hang of bevels, which is great and a big step forward.
Hope you stick with it and can make that dream happen. Wish you all the best.

I'm just a hobbyist but passionate and love it, I dream of doing it professionally too...
Problem is it seems I've been too sucessful at making way too much money, doing stuff i dont love. And now that Im engaged to a lovely girl who (albeit amazing) wants the world and 7+ children, I can't see it happening anytime soon. :(
But maybe one day.

Keep it up mate and thanks for the advice. Ill check out that app.

Most folks use an image hosting website, imgur.com is pretty easy and what many folks use.

Nice job on the first knife.
Thanks mate I'll try that one and see if i can work it out.
Pretty imppressed with the forum so far. Seems a worthwhile endeavor.

Awesome job buddy! Keep it up!!

.

She wants 7 kids?!? She better get a job! Those things are expensive!!

7 kids....run! maybe you can talk her into dogs, dogs are cool and cheaper

seriuosly, from my limited knife making experience, the comments above seem to be spot on about little things like the handle and rciasso.

from as aesthetic standpoint - I dont like the 4 pins and how they are spaces, but thats just me.
if i saw this at a shop, without somebody smarter than me pointing out the things they did above, I'd be impressed

Good job with the esteem. I'm going on 2 years with mine and still love it. My only regret is a more convenient rest setup.
That radius at the top of your handle looks very familiar. I'm going to guess that it comes from the top roller on your platen. I started out doing a lot that way and they felt good in my hand especially since most of the non kitchen knives I used were folders. If you get the small wheel arm for your grinder you can get some small wheels from pops at a good price. You have to call him. I bought a 1/2" and a 1" I think. That smaller radius will let you get closer to the blade and can look nice. It also uses the handle length more effectively. There is no one way to do things and it looks like a very effective knife. Good work.

Lol yes expensive, or so I've heard.
Kinda like their future mother!
She could get a job I guess, but then who'd look after our seven children all day?
