Today, my first CR knife (Carbon Fiber Small Sebenza 21) came in and it's very tough to open one-handed. Is this normal and just needs a break-in period? It's a beautiful knife and I can't believe how light weight it is.

Arnie--Welcome to the CRK family. We require you post pics of the knife BEFORE we are willing to answer any questions.

Just kidding brother--give it a few days to wear in a little.

Congrats and enjoy!
Continue to open 'til your thumb is bloody.... then report back. :D

I think that should be a requirement for sure to post pics. Sebenza's open different than most blades so there is a small learning curve:) Give it a few days and you will be hooked. Remember never sell your first CRK:)

What types of knives are you comparing to?
You are pushing the side of the thumb-stud? It is common for people to press their thumb into the top of the thumb-stud, which is not the best way.

Nice choice for your first! Keep working it, the action will smooth out. You can also add a drop of oil to free it up a little bit extra.
And...... We do need pics!!

My small CF was stiff to open at first too. Just sit down for a movie, fiddle with it while you watch and it'll loosen up. And welcome to the family! :D

Everyone, thanks for the info and I would love to post a pic, but I don't have a paid membership here so I can't.

Use an image hosting site like imgur, then just copy the direct link and then post it as so:

Congrats, the c/f is a great choice.I know this might sound kind of obvious but when you open it check if you are pressing on the locking side of the scale, sometimes that happens before you get used to the locking mechanism, even light pressure can make it really hard to open, if that is not the case, as mentioned before, just play with it and give it time to smooth out, hope that helps.
Cheers

Is it normal for the pocket clip to be applying pressure to the lock bar even when the lock is engaged? I thought that I had read that there should be a slight gap when the knife is open.

It took me a few weeks to learn to open it one handed.

I have flicked it open about a dozen times but I literally feel guilty (since hearing chris reeve doesnt recommend flick open) and just sweep out with thumb.

When my small seb is open, pocket clip is like 0.5mm away from lock. Maybe your clip is very tight.

Just checked both my Sebenza's, and the pocket clip is still applying pressure even when the lock is engaged. Completely normal :)

My small still applies good pressure. My large touches, but it's light. If I tap the knife just right, you can hear it vibrate a little.

So, what CRK are you getting next? That's awesome, I usually scan threw BF and will break in a knife, my 25 smoothed out beautifully, it took some time thou. Congrats.

I'm afraid I'm going to be spoiled by this knife now. Benchmades and Spydercos just won't cut it any more! ;)

It's natural :p I've sold off pretty much all other knives in my collection other than a few special Spyderco's.

Just picked up my first 21 today and was pressing on the lockbar making it a little hard to openm iv had many framelocks including an umnumm and I was still doing this.just takes some time to get the feel of a different knife in the hand. Congrats on your new blade, I love mine.
