Hey all. I got my Sharpmaker in the mail this week and decided to try sharpening my and sparklygalaxy's Victorinox SAKs, which have become dull over the years. After a good cleaning (we open a lot of Amazon packages) and a few passes on the coarse and fine stones apiece, they're both slicing paper again! I'm sure they could both be sharper, but I consider this a successful first attempt.

Well done!

Its so easy to use and no water needed or dirty created.

Sometimes it's easier to use the without the base to hit the existing angle better.
Diamond or CBN are a great addition, too.

I bought a Sharpmaker last December, and have used it on several knives. It seems to work great if you consistently keep the knife vertical. I also picked up the extra fine rods and it can get blades shaving sharp.

How is the Sharpmaker on kitchen knives? Great job on the SAK's!

I haven't tried it on a kitchen knife yet. I'm not really sure there is a difference, but if they take a different angle I'm sure you can always freehand with the stones :D

I have a bread knife from sweden ;)
serrated edge.
Did not slice paper well.
10 passes with fine rods on one side, 2 on the other (flat side) and back to slicing. Just freehanding.

You can clean the rods very easily with Barkeepers Friend.
They cut much easier when they are squeaky clean.

Now that I know how to upload pictures, I can show you the aftermath of the storm that is inconsistent freehand sharpening muhahaha. Took it from my coarse moldmasters to the standard set and finished on the UF stones and it cut just as well on paper as any of the other blades I put through the same process. It is also had a mirror polish in its apex (which I am proud of, but completely upset that I didn't make the bevels just as shiny). My mom used it and she said it did amazing!(Which means she's proud of me! And probably won't let me sharpen any of the other knives, and definitely not her 4116 knife or our cutco knife). If I don't happen to upload it, just know that I am not the best sharpener, and it is scored more than a good steak lol
EDIT: I added more about how it performed/looked in the end
Double EDIT: Cutco/Vector use their own sharpmaker as well (Why don't they sell this instead of their pull through?)

Hi,
Is it Because pyramid cult?

Last year I got a cold call (spam) from one of their employees... then three months later
I saw one cutco ed reed sharpener for sale, ad said employee exclusive, new ones costs $240 ,
and then I found this
true internet story from 2011 This is an incredibly SCARCE item. It is only available to Cutco representatives with over $6,000 in sales, and is NOT meant for the general public to have!!

With a forever guarantee and "free" sharpening, why would they sell actual abrasives/employee incentives to consumers?

After all they're successful selling $1k knife sets / $100 sabre ground kitchen knives.

Speaking of $1k sets, this guy doesn't like to sharpen , and only steels for 6 months I am a professional chef. After years ... for $200 I can buy 40 chef knives at SAMs. At two a year, that will last me 20 years.
It can take me three months to reach one thousand slices in the kitchen, where a chef easily does more cutting in one day.

The only reason we have a big 440A knife (that has lifetime sharpening/warranty) is because my twin sister did it for a quick minute before we went to college. But dang 240$? I can get 14 Lansky turnboxes for that price or 4 sharpmakers. (I just realized that lansky is an alternative that I can reccomend)
