For some strange reason, when I saw the title of this thread, my first thought was this. :D

I really like asparagus, but it doesn't like me.

Their you go, reading my mind again. :D:D:D

I was thinking maters, but it is a tad early. Global cooling has brought a very mild spring here in So Cal. Tomatos and peppers will be a tad later than usual. Nice pics, even though I still do not like asparagus.

. . . I still do not like asparagus.

WHAT!? Get outa my state. :grumpy:

Actually, that's okay - leaves more for me. :D I'd eat it at every meal if I could.

Bernie - great pics. Unfortunately, we don't have the soil we need for serious gardening.

thx - cpr

Nice.

I've never grown asparagus but I enjoy eating it. Are there any special tricks to getting a good crop?

Kind regards, -Spinner

Thank for sharing the Garden in pictures Bernie Garland.

I can't wait to get my Tomato's in the ground. The leaves on the trees here are still fighting to open up.

Looks really good.asparagus takes a few years.Me and the wife tried a garden the last few years, our soil is pretty worthless.I think it's because it has too much clay in it.Also the fact that we live in the trees and the sun does'nt hit it long enough.

I am doing a garden this year for the first time and was going to grow asparagus. A friend who is a farmer and worked in a green house said I might not want to because it starts to take over and gets out of control. Any of you had issues like that?

I have two asparagus beds of "Jersey Knight" planted in the corner of my garden and have not had any issues with them spreading. They have been there for 5 and 6 years respectively. If anything, I wish they would spread out a bit cause I love-eaten-em so much!. Seriously though, My neighbor advised me to dig a ditch about 18" wide by 18" deep and they mix the soil with a few bags of sand to create a "Loam Type Soil". He then told me to place the asparagus crowns in the center with the roots spread out like an octopus in all directions. I planted them in the fall I believe? they shot up in the spring. He advised very light picking the first 3 years to help establish the root systems. That was hard letting them go to fern, but now I get a steady crop every year.
