Hello everyone.I'll try to be as brief as possible.I am not a knife maker and know next to nothing about them except for the fact that I am amazed at the level of craftsmanship and beauty of the knives that you make.I joined this forum to search for unique handle material.Archery is my passion and I make custom side plates for compound bows useing many of the exotic materials that you use on your knives.I owe you all a debt of gratitude as you had a direct influence in my decission to start making these.Anyway, that is a long story so here is my question.I have purchased my first custom made knife from a very nice man I met at an archery event. He had several knives for sale and one caught my eye.It is a fixed blade hunter. He is holding the knife for me until he recieves my money order. My question is what determines whether a knife has a lanyard tube or does not?I see that alot of the knives on here have them and I like the looks of it.My second question is if you have a finished knife, could you put a lanyard on it or would this involve too much work or be too dificult to do without destroying the finished handle? Thanks for any input you can give me.

To me a lanyard hole was of no value when I was hunting. To have a thong going through it and putting that around your wrist when you used it was a sure way to cut yourself bad. A lanyard hole to tie it to your case was extra bagage whe I made straight knives for sale since I made my cases with a flap that buttoned down. Frank

Me personaly I don't care for a lanyard, but some people like them. Outside of a survival type knife where you might want to make it a spear or some such I don't see a real good reason to have a lanyard. I do make some knives with lanyards, some people like a bit of a lanyard to help pull the knife from the sheath and for decoration.

My .02$, your milage may very.

Pretty much the dicision for a laynard hole is up to the maker or if the person ordering the knife wants one. I would not try to put one in an exsisting handle as there is too much to chance messing it up.It also depends on the style handle and material the knife is made of.

I was doing some reading about Bob Loveless and he once stated the reason that he puts a thong hole in his knives. Plain and simple, it allows him to hang the knife on a nail in his shop while it is between procedures. Very few people ever actually put a lanyard or thong on their hunting knife, but many like the looks of the thong hole and it is there in case a reason came up to put it to use.

The majority of my knives have a lanyard hole. I like to give the user the option of using a lanyard. I never really use lanyards unless the knife is on the small side.

A smaller knife might bennefit from a lanyard

Here's a thought:
If you realy like the knife the maker made but also like a lanyard hole/tube, he might be willing to make a 2nd knife just like it but with the tube as a special order for you.
But there could be a waitingtime.
Just ask him :)
