First custom slippie

I am deciding which maker to order from for my first custom slippie. I spoke to Joe Allen about a Lannies clip, and he is e-mailing me how long his backlog is. I would like to know if anyone has knives by Mike Alsdorf or Tim Britton? Their prices seem almost too reasonable for custom knives. I noticed in Blade magazine Britton uses premium stag and bg-42 steel and his price for a Trapper is only $245.00. Alsdorf uses 440c steel which is old school but a custom jack is only $215.00. Are their any other makers that anyone can recommend for a mid-priced custom? Thanks Dave spada8@comcast.net

You've mentioned three of the best right there.

Though I don't own any of Mike Alsdorf's knives, his reputation is impeccable for the knives he builds. You can't go wrong.

Tim Britton is also developing quite a following it seems.

Other than Joe Allen who does great work, I'd personally add Ken Erickson to the mix as well as a couple of ABS master smiths, Ray Kirk and Raymond Smith both of whom produce knives in the same price range with forged blades.

Sounds like you're on the right track. Now just pick the pattern and the maker (or more than one) and enjoy.

I have to say that Kerry Hampton makes a heck of a nice custom! I just received my first custom knife ever, from him, in his Trade-Away (see my thread...), and it's amazing.
Don't know if he's taking orders, but it wouldn't hurt to ask. ;)

+1 for Ray Kirk. he's a wonderful man and a fantastic knifemaker!
