Ok...you have all heard it before...but now some limitations...

You are a college student, addicted to knives and guns, you trade off between the two. Buy one...then another. But you have a budget limitation. Say, 200-400, including tax. The cheaper the better, yet not so much better?? (I really dont know?)
Your plan after college is to find a job, you are single and have no intention of ending your life as a bachelor, where you can hunt and fish as much as possible.
You have no desire for a pretty knife, this will be a user. Who do you order from? What type of style? Why?

(You guys have already gotten me in trouble. Might as well dive in head first.)

I'd go with something like this:

http://www.dozierknives.com/images/k-4.gif

It's well within your budget and it would work great for hunting. You may have to pick up an "el cheapo" filet knife for fishing. The Dozier is a pretty knife AND a user! It's cool to find a good looking knife that works great.

I would most certainly take a look at the knives of Bob Dozier. He has fixed blade and folders and all are users.

Bob's knives are tough, with great fit and finish and always seem to be comfortable in my hand.

If you are looking for a fixed blade there are lot's of other makers that I could recommend. Sean Kendrick, Bill Siegle, Robert Hankins, Geno Denning and Bill Buxton would definitely be amongst this group. All would make knives well within your price range.

Well, you didn't specify fixed or folder.

If you are looking for a folder that is general purpose as you suggest above, I think another great value are knives made by Mike Obenauf. Right at $300, you can get a small Model 1 (still pretty big) or a Model 2. He, like Bob Dozier uses D2 extensively.

You can find him at http://www.kvnet.org/knives/obenauf/

I don't know how much he charges to make the knife ugly though.

Good luck.

Help us out a little more. . .and please be specific.

What do you intend on doing with the knife ?

Primary use. . .secondary use. . .

We don't want to recommend a small multi-blade folder when you need a bowie. . .

Lets see...hunting, fishing, a "user" knife. Deffinetly sounds like a Bob Dozier would be a great choice. Great designs, great steal, just all around great knives for the money.

I just posted this on another thread, but.....

You need to take a look at a Terry Primos hunter. I have one of his drop point hunters (forged 1084) and it cut's like crazy. Easy to keep sharp, and great workmanship. Do a search on the Gallery for his work, you'll be impressed!

Bob Dozier would be another great choice. If you stay with the top of your budget, you may be able to pick up something from both makers :D :D :D

If it were up to me I'd go with this...

R_470.jpg

Randall Ivory Smithsonian. very high quality knife. Can be purchased at my favorite local knife shop www.nordicknives.com

How in the hell would you use that thing for hunting or fishing?

That Smithsonian is a cool knife, but I just couldn't imagine butchering or skinning any animal with it. Not even a water buffalo! Maybe an elephant? :D

Do you really think that knife can be purchased for his $200-$400 budget?
NIce knife and nice pic, but you may want to try reading the post first.

Fixed: Dozier, Randall, Busse, Simonich...
Folder: MOD, Buck/Strider...

Another thing to do is to look throught the Shoptalk forum here. It is full of up and coming makers who have the quality, but not yet the name recognition to sell for the big $$

I'll put in another plug for Bob Dozier. Awesome knives that won't break your budget. How many makers are known as the masters of their preferred steel, and sell their knives are less than $200.00. Not many.

Bob and his wife Linda are also a breath of fresh air to deal with.
