Hi everyone,

This is my first post but i've lurked for a while. I finally took the plunge and got my first custom:D. Its AWESOME. Its a WD Pease- persian style with side lock. It has a stainless damascus blade and H. Knickmeyer mosaic damascus bolsters. The best part-- handle is antique tortoise shell. I dont believe in this knife being a display model and intend to use it. FOr that reason I have a few questions to all the knowledgable people on the forum.

1. Tortoise shell is really fragile and easy to scratch. Any expereince/advice on best ways to care for it? Should i keep it hydrated? And if so, with what? Will it shrink or crack?

2. What is the best sheath- Can I go with leather or just kind of a roomy pouch?

3. What if there is a scratch, should i buff? or just suck it up...

BTW, working with Mr Pease was an awesome experience, he is super nice and did some upgrades for me without adding onto the price. I woudl totally work with him again.

Thanks in advance for any advice. Mr Pease was really nice with care instructions too. I just want to learn as much as possible, seemingly the internet is actually sparse on the care of tortoise shell so i figured i would ask the collective experience.

Pics when i can figure out how to post...

Congrats, this sounds like a nice knife, I really want to see it.

Congratulations, sounds like a terrific knife. I've probably owned 30 knives by Bill over the years. I don't think you need to worry about the shell, it'll hold up fine. I would think that if you use the knife it'll be for mail or something not too tough.

Any scratches that bother you should be taken care of by a pro. For storage I can only recommend Bill's Custom Cases, you can get cordura or leather and they are padded.

I take any new knives and put a coat of Renaissance Wax on them. Do the whole knife.

Welcome to the world of customs!

I forgot to mention the gold screws and braided gold:D

WD Pease makes great knives. I especially like his folders. He always seems to use such great handle material.
Congrats on your first and good selection.

Looking forward to seeing photos.

Wow, that is a gorgeous piece. Quite the first custom you snagged there.

You are off to wonderful start Sir.
That is among the most beautiful WD Pease knives I have seen.

Congratulations.

For your first knife you made a great score. Bill makes a really nice knife.

Thanks to everyone for the compliments. Mr Pease does consistently great work and thats why I chose him. I also gave him some artistic license and asked him for as much input as possible, quite often deferring to his expertise. I also want to thank all the people here for hte wealth of knowlege on the forum. Being a lurker, I read and learned much before "putting down" for a custom and I don't think I woudl have gotten what I wanted without learning on the front end.

Wow that would make a nice pair... I'm still partial to the one i created though ;) Unfortunately it took a while to save for my first custom. It'll be a while before I pull the trigger on another... Still its really pretty...

Mongkorn-

Keep that beauty away from guitar and especially mandolin players...they would kill to pry off that tortoise shell to make picks out of it! Simply beautiful knife, BTW.

Point taken... I'll be wary of those guitar and especially mandolin players... wahts the deal with that anyway? does it make the sound better, or is it purely an aesthetic thing like with me and my knife?

I have a tin ear, but others seem to like the sound it doesn't? make. . . guys will pay outrageous amounts for one, especially considering you can get a pack of six ultex picks for under 3$. I have heard of guys going antiqueing with their wives solely to see if they can find old furnishings with tortoise inlay they can salvage. And if you drop a tortoise pick at a bluegrass festival, don't expect an honest man to be found.

SO-

Keep that knife hidden around musicians. . .you've been warned.
